When we talk about bathrooms, we just take care of our bathroom fittings and toilet seats. Then why don’t we take the same care when it comes to toilet cistern? In an average household, 40% of the water is used in bathroom and toilet cistern. You just need to be a little careful and carry out few simple but important steps to check if your toilet cistern is using more water than required, and if you find out that, it is than you can reduce the wastage of water as well as save money.

1 Fix the leaks in your toilet cistern A large amount of water can be wasted from a leaking toilet cistern. It is surprising but true that a leaking toilet cistern can waste 12 litres or more water in an hour. So if you do not notice this or ignore this situation than the amount of water wasted becomes significantly high. It is necessary that the households keep checking for leaks on regular basis and if any leaks are found one should fix them immediately. You may want to call the plumber if required. Now the question rises how do we come to that the toilet cistern is leaking. So let me tell you that most of the time a leaking cistern makes a humming sound constantly because the toilet needs to take in more water and also needs to replace the leaked water simultaneously. However, you cannot rely on this always because at times the humming sound may not be heard. If you are not sure, whether your toilet cistern is leaking than you can carry out a DYI test. All you need to do is open the cistern lid and you need to add some drops of food dye. Now after putting some food dye you notice the water in the bowl to be colored before you flush than the cistern is leaking. You can also diagnose whether there is leak or not by holding a small piece of toilet paper inner side of the bow but on the back. If the paper gets wet than, it is cleared that there is a leakage. Once you have confirmed that, there is a leak you must repair it immediately so that any further waste of water is avoided. 2 Get a dual flush cistern installed We all know what a dual flush toilet cistern is. It one mechanism that helps in saving water as it has two buttons. With the help of one button, you get a full flush and a half flush with the second button. Today most of the new planned and built houses have this system however; it is not available in the old houses. You can get them installed by calling a plumber. The reason why I am emphasizing on the dual cistern is this system uses four to six litres of water when you do a full flush and around two to three litres of water for half flush. However, the older cisterns use nearly ten litres every time you flush. So let us keep a check on our toilet cistern and save water. http://www.victorianplumbing.co.uk/Toilet-Seats.aspx http://www.victorianplumbing.co.uk/Toilets.aspx
