When the weather outside turns nasty and water begins to enter the home, your first thought is probably replacing the roof. This is an expensive option that isn’t always necessary. In fact, Roofing in Silverdale WA can often be as simple as exchanging worn shingles or eliminating damaged sealant around roofing details such as attic vents or flashing. A leak around an attic vent has very little opposition because the main thing that keeps out the weather is the metal around the vent and any sealant used to cover gaps.

However, not all roof failures are that simple. A roof can fail when the covering has aged to the point that it pulls away from the decking. This is a common problem with budget shingles, most of which have a service life of fifteen years. As this product endures the elements, it can dry out, curl or crack. The only alternative in these instances is to have a roofer replace the shingle with a superior product.

There are several excellent options for replacement Roofing in Silverdale WA. For example, you can opt for composite shingles, stamped steel roofing or fiber-cement tiles. Composite shingles are a variant on asphalt roofing that are designed to last for decades. Many manufacturers warrant this product for the life of the home which means that you may never need to replace the roof again, barring acts of God.

Steel roofing is a more expensive option that provides a roof designed to last fifty years or longer. Steel has several benefits including the ability to emulate most other roofing options and the capability to be installed over certain existing asphalt roofs. Steel roofing for residential usage comes in smaller sheets that are easy to apply which makes installation very quick. Plus, when the material is installed over an existing roof, the use of battens provides better airflow which reduces trapped heat.

Fiber-cement is a roofing solution that can last about thirty-five years. This material is very similar to the siding used on many homes and is designed to withstand high winds and rain. Fiber-cement provides a distinctive look which many people prefer and is the perfect solution for many roof replacements. No matter which option you select it is important to have the roofer inspect the roof occasionally and make repairs as quickly as possible.

Firefighters rescue nearly a dozen animals in Buffalo, New York house fire

Friday, June 22, 2007

Buffalo, New York —A three alarm fire at a house owned by John and Evelyn Bencinich, two of the initiators of a lawsuit filed against the Elmwood Village Hotel proposal in Buffalo, required firefighters to rescue eight cats and two dogs in Buffalo, New York today.

At about 8:30 (eastern time) firefighters were called to the home on 48 Granger Place to put out a fire that had started in the basement. It quickly spread to the first floor where the main bathroom was destroyed. The fire did not spread to the second floor or attic.

Initial calls said that many animals were inside the house and firefighters quickly worked to rescue all the cats and dogs. At least one cat and one dog had to receive CPR and oxygen, but both are reported to be in stable condition. At least 3 cats are unaccounted for, but after a search of the house, the cats were not believed to have been inside at the time the fire started.

One elderly woman, Anna Bencinich, the mother of Evelyn, was rescued by neighbors who helped her from the burning house.

“There was smoke all over the house. The fire started in the basement and spread to a small portion of the first floor. Two firefighters were injured while fighting the fire and were transported to Erie County Medical Center,” said Division Fire Chief Thomas Ashe who also said that sections of the kitchen wall at the back of the house had to be torn out to stop the fire from spreading through the walls.

One firefighter is being treated for bite injuries to his face that he received while attempting to rescue a dog. The other firefighter was treated for injuries he received to his hand, which was believed to have been caused by glass or a cat scratching him. The names of the injured firefighters are not known. The injuries are said to not be life threatening.

According to witness reports, the home owners had a new water heater installed just last week, but it is not known if the fire was caused by the heater.

“We believe the fire was caused by an electrical (malfunction). An investigation is being conducted,” said Battalion Chief Joe Fahey who also added that they did not believe arson was the cause.

Polish mine explosion kills 8

Wednesday, November 22, 2006

Methane gas was blamed for the explosion deaths of 8 miners in southern Polish‘s Halemba coal mine Tuesday, November 21. Officials say at least 15 are missing.

Rescue efforts were halted because dangerously high levels of methane gas returned, according to Zbigniew Madej, spokesman for state-owned Coal Co., which operates the mine.

The missing miners’ locater devices were not emitting signals, increasing rescurers’ concerns for their well-being. Grzegorz Pawlaszek, head of Coal Co., said the 15 missing miners’ fate is “not known,” but added that “there is a chance to find someone still alive.”

“This is a tragedy. People have died here,” Polish Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski said when he came to Ruda Slaska to see the blast.

Earlier Wednesday, a reconnaissance rescue team descended 3000 feet toward the blast scene, only to retreat because of safety concerns related to high methane gas levels. Rescue digging efforts were also halted because of explosion concerns.

The missing men were aged 21-59. One of the miner’s family members, Andrzej Pytlik, 30, remained on scene with his sister, hoping and waiting for news of her husband, Krystian Gaszka.

Pytlik, also a miner, said through teary eyes that, “I work in the mines and I know that hope is scant because that’s the truth.”

The explosion occurred in a closed portion of the mine where the now-missing miners were working to retrieve abandoned equipment. According to Pawlaszek, the value of the equipment was $23 million, adding that “It was new equipment and that is why we decided to retrieve it.”

He indicated that the recovery work was performed under the supervision of gas detection specialists, and that the bodies of the recovered miners were difficult to identify because of the severity of burns and because their ID tags were blown away in the explosion.

The Halemba mine, located in Ruda Slaska, has produced coal for nearly 50 years, has been fraught with safety concerns and has a track record of serious accidents. One of the oldest mines in Poland, it is centrally located in the industrial Silesia region.

Earlier this year, a miner was trapped underground in the Halemba mine five days after a cave-in. In 1990, 19 miners were killed and 20 hurt in a gas explosion, and five were killed in collapse in 1991.

Inside, priests and mining officials were comforting and counseling with distraught relatives. Outside, eight white candles flickered on a main gate wall.

Pakistan opposition parties form coalition

Thursday, February 21, 2008

Pakistan’s two major opposition parties, the Pakistan Peoples Party and the Pakistan Muslim League (N), have announced they will work together to form a new government after defeating allies of President Pervez Musharraf in Monday’s parliamentary elections.

The leaders of the two parties, former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif of the Pakistan Muslim League, and Benazir Bhutto‘s husband Asif Ali Zardari of the PPP, made the announcement today at a joint press conference. “We have agreed on a common agenda. We will work together to form a government together,” said Sharif. A smaller opposition party, the Awami National Party, will also be helping the new government, according to the party leaders.

“The future of democracy is within our grasp,” Zardari said. “We will strengthen the parliament, we will strengthen democracy, we will work together for Pakistan. We will make a stronger Pakistan.”

Zadari says the parties have agreed “in principle” to join together, although details of the agreement have not yet been finalized and remain unclear. “Governance is a serious business,” Zadari said, “and everything cannot be decided at a two-hour meeting. We will be meeting again off and on.”

The two leaders did not mention any plans to impeach Musharraf from office, which would require a two-thirds majority in Parliament. But Zadari seemed to indicate that “pro-Musharraf forces” would not be included in the coalition. “I don’t believe pro-Musharraf forces exist,” he said.

One thing the parties have already agreed on is the reinstatement of judges fired by Musharraf during the state of emergency last November. “In principle there’s no disagreement on restoration of the judiciary. We will work on the modalities in parliament,” said Sharif.

One of the displaced judges is Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudary, who remains under house arrest in Islamabad. Pakistani lawyers protested his arrest in the capital and other major cities. Through smuggled cell phones, Chaudary spoke to the protesters, telling them, “Victory is not far off now.” Police threw tear gas at the protesters, some of whom were hurling stones and burning effigies of the president.

The Pakistan Peoples Party won 88 seats and the Pakistan Muslim League (N) won 66 in the 272-member National Assembly. The pro-Musharraf Pakistan Muslim League only won 40 seats, thus losing their majority in Parliament.

The purpose of homeowner’s insurance in Suffolk County NY is to protect you against financial losses. You pay a fee to your insurer, which is a small, measurable loss, to protect yourself from the potential of a large, unexpected loss later. If you own your home and continue to pay property taxes, you can do as you choose with your home -; but you’re also responsible for repairs. This responsibility is the primary reason why home insurance is such an important investment.

What’s not Covered

According to surveys, homeowners aren’t really sure of what’s covered by their policies. One-third of all homeowners believe that a standard policy covers flood damage, and almost half think that they’re covered if a water main breaks. 35% believe that home insurance covers earthquake damage, and slightly less than that number think that mold damage is covered. However, perils not covered typically include:

1. Floods2. Earthquakes3. Mold intrusion4. Damaged parts of the property such as plumbing, wiring, roofing and heating/AC units5. Wartime acts

What is Covered

Homeowner’s Insurance policies are written so that damage must be accidental and sudden in order to be covered -; meaning that a slow leak, causing damage over months or years, isn’t covered. If your roof collapses due to age, and not from wind damage, it’s likely not to be covered. Perils covered by a home insurance policy usually include:

1. Fire2. Tornadoes and hurricanes3. Theft4. Hail damage

Liability Insurance

Many insurance policies include liability coverage. Some people think that they’re careful enough to not need it, but this coverage is necessary. If a neighboring house burns down because of an unattended grill, you’re responsible for the damage. You pay a premium each month so that you’re covered in the event of a large claim, such as if someone’s hurt while in your house.

Home Based Businesses

In most cases, home businesses aren’t covered under standard homeowner’s insurance in Suffolk County NY area. For that, you’ll need a business or commercial policy to properly cover business areas and their accompanying liabilities.

Some insurers offer policies at what seems like an impossibly low rate. If the company is unfamiliar and its rates sound too good to be true, they probably are! Get the highest quality coverage you can afford, because in the end, cheap coverage can be more expensive than you think. For more information, visit

13 pilot whales returning to sea, off Western Australia

Monday, April 4, 2005

Rescuers were today sending a pod of 13 pilot whales back into the ocean at Geographe Bay, near to Busselton, south of Perth, in Western Australia. Six additional members of the pod had died during the stranding, including at least one calf. More than 300 people were watching as the whales set out to sea following a 30 hour rescue effort.

The whales had become stranded early yesterday. Several power boats and a spotter plane were escorting the surviving whales towards Cape Naturalist, in an operation expected to take several hours.

Western Australian State Government Department of Conservation and Land Management (CALM) officers feared that the whales could become stranded again.

One CALM officer, Neil Taylor, told ABC News dozens of his colleagues and community volunteers had helped the whales survive throughout the night.

“The vet has checked them all and given them some antibiotics yesterday, last thing before dark,” he had told the Australian national broadcaster.

“I think the plan is that the vet will be there again [today] and will give them some vitamins to kick them along before they actually take their swim out to sea.”

Israel buys nuclear capable subs

Israel buys nuclear capable subs
Posted by , No Comments

Friday, August 25, 2006

Israel has purchased two more Dolphin class submarines which have the capacity to carry nuclear warheads. Israel already has three older nuclear weapons-capable Dolphin submarines but the new Dolphins have propulsion systems that allow them to remain submerged for longer periods of time, according to the Jerusalem Post, making it harder for them to be tracked by satellite. Experts view the purchase as a clear signal to Iran that Israel can retaliate if subjected to a nuclear attack.

“The Iranians would be very foolish if they attacked Israel,” said Paul Beaver, a British based defence analyst, speaking to the Washington Post. According to Beaver, the submarines would provide Israel with both first strike and second strike capability.

Israel already has land-based nuclear-capable ballistic missiles in the form of the Jericho I and II missiles.

German officials confirm that the contracts for the new submarines was signed July 6. The Jerusalem Post reports that they will be operational shortly.

Israel has never confirmed nor denied that it has nuclear weapons but is believed to have the world’s sixth largest stockpile of the devices, with most outside estimates putting their stockpile in the low hundreds. Israel’s possession of nuclear arms has often been a locus of bitter controversy in the Middle East, especially among countries who believe that the world community, and especially the United States, is hypocritical in its tolerance of Israeli nuclear arms while decrying the efforts of other Middle Eastern nations to develop their own nuclear capabilities.

Meanwhile, the Jerusalem Post reports there is a growing mood among Israel’s defence establishment that the country will have to act independently to stop Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons as the United States is unlikely to do so.

“America is stuck in Iraq and cannot go after Iran militarily right now,” according to an unnamed official quoted by the paper.

A report by the US House of Representatives’ Intelligence Committee released on Wednesday asserts that if Iran arms itself with nuclear weapons, Israel would be pressed to respond militarily. “A nuclear armed Iran would likely exacerbate regional tensions. Israel would find it hard to live with a nuclear armed Iran and could take military action against Iranian nuclear facilities,” the report states. Iran has continually maintained that it seeks only to develop nuclear technology for the production of electrical power, though this has been disputed by many nations.
