Chinese Foreign Ministry confirms arrest of bookseller Gui Minhai

Thursday, February 8, 2018

On Tuesday, the Chinese Foreign Ministry confirmed they had detained Hong Kong-based bookseller Gui Minhai. Ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang said, “Gui Minhai broke Chinese law and has already been subjected to criminal coercive measures in accordance with the law by relevant Chinese authorities”.

According to Minhai’s daughter, Chinese police arrested Gui in Beijing in January. 53-year-old Minhai, who was diagnosed with a progressive neurodegenerative disease, was travelling to the Chinese capital to see a Swedish doctor. Minhai holds dual citizenship of Sweden and China, and has written about the Chinese Communist Party leaders of China, amongst them Xi Jinping, the president of China. Geng Shuang in his statement said, “I want to once again stress that China opposes any form of speech or actions that ignore China’s legal sovereignty.”

On Monday, Swedish Foreign Minister Margot Wallstrom stated, “Chinese action was contrary to basic international rules on consular support.” “The current situation also raises questions about the application of the rule of law, including the prohibition of arbitrary deprivation of liberty. We demand that our citizen be given the opportunity to meet Swedish diplomatic and medical staff, and that he be released so that he can be reunited with his daughter and family”, Wallstorm added.

In October 2015, Gui disappeared in Thailand, and months later, he was found in China and stated he had surrendered for a 2003 case of driving under the influence of alcohol, in which reportedly a student died. He was imprisoned for two years, and was released in October, last year. He was not permitted to leave China.

Geng Shuang said, “Although Gui Minhai is a Swedish citizen, the case he is involved in must be handled in accordance with Chinese law. China and Sweden are maintaining open communication channels on this case.”

Telecom New Zealand to sell Yellow Page Group

Saturday, November 4, 2006

Telecom New Zealand has announced that it is going to sell its Yellow Page Group business and is expecting at least NZ$2 billion. The Yellow Page Group includes the Yellow Pages, White Pages (which includes both offline and online services), New Zealand Retirement Guide and New Zealand Tourism Online.

However Chief Financial Officer, Mark Bogoievski, will not comment on how much the reserve price is.

The company says that the money they get from selling the directories will be used to repay almost $3.5 billion worth of debt.

Theresa Gattung, Chief Executive of Telecom, said: “There has already been considerable interest shown in the future of Yellow Pages Group based on recent media speculation. We expect that the sale should be completed by the end of this financial year.”

The Yellow Page Group generates $250 million worth of revenue per annum and employs 600 people.

Ms Gattung said: “In the long term the business will be dominated by the global players. It’s really prudent off us to take this opportunity to see what value we can get looking at the sale of this business at this stage.”

Analysts are warning Telecom that it would miss out on the digital media possibilities. “It looks to me that it is a bit of a panic reaction in order to generate some quick cash,” said, telecommunications expert, Paul Budde, “I think it’s a short-term sort of strategy to generate some cash, but it will undermine its long term strategy to move from the old Telecom’s world into the new digital media world.”

Ms Gattung said that the privacy of the individuals will be kept, “obviously we’re only going to sell to a very reputable party.”

Telecom is also hinting at cutting hundreds of jobs to invest in new technology to beat off competition.

US National Football League to fine teams if athletes kneel during national anthem

Friday, May 25, 2018

On Wednesday, the US National Football League (NFL) announced adopting a new policy of fining the clubs if their athletes knelt during the national anthem. Per the policy, athletes who do not wish to stand for the anthem are now permitted to stay in the locker room. Under the new policy, the commissioner can “impose appropriate discipline on league personnel who do not stand and show respect for the flag and the Anthem.”

According to commissioner Roger Goodell, in their meeting in Atlanta NFL owners reached a unanimous decision. In the statement, Goodell said, “It was unfortunate that on-field protests created a false perception among many that thousands of NFL players were unpatriotic […] This is not and was never the case.” Per the earlier policy, athletes had to be present on the sidelines of the field during the anthem.

Since 2016, when former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick started kneeling during the pre-match national anthem in a protest against racial discrimination, police brutality and shooting of African-Americans by policemen, multiple athletes have joined the protests taking a knee when the US national anthem — The Star-Spangled Banner — was played. Kaepernick then said, “I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of colour”.

The NFL Players Association said the NFL did not consult them before announcing the policy. The day before the NFL’s statement, the clubs agreed to donate 90 million US dollars (USD) to initiatives for social justice.

Eric Reid, a former teammate of Kaepernick who also took a knee during the national anthem, said, “I needed to use a platform to speak out for other people who didn’t have a voice. So I joined Colin in protesting the issues in this country, which include police brutality, systemic oppression of black and brown people”. He added, “This is not about disrespecting the military or the anthem. This is a way for me to bring awareness around these issues in our country.”

The new policy now allows the clubs to devise their own provisions for fining or suspending the players. New York Jets’ chairperson Christopher Johnson said, “There will be no club fines or suspensions or any sort of repercussions. If the team gets fined, that’s just something I’ll have to bear.”

Owner of San Francisco 49ers Jed York abstained from voting for the NFL policy in Atlanta.

Former US president Barack Obama, in September 2016, said Kaepernick was “exercising his constitutional right”. Current US president Donald Trump, in September 2017, called the athletes who knelt during the national anthem unpatriotic and “disgraceful”. Trump also said, “Wouldn’t you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say, ‘Get that son of a bitch off the field right now, out, he’s fired.'”

Regarding the new policy, Malcolm Jenkins, a defensive back for the Philadelphia Eagles, said, “What NFL owners did today was thwart the players’ constitutional rights to express themselves and use our platform to draw attention to social injustices like racial inequality in our country. Everyone loses when voices get stifled.” His teammate Chris Long, who donated USD one million to charity last season, wrote on Twitter, “This is fear of a diminished bottom line. It’s also a fear of a president turning his base against a corporation. This is not patriotism. Don’t get it confused.”

Retired quarterback Sage Rosenfels tweeted saying, “I hope the NFL decides to completely stop all concession stand sales during the anthem as well. We wouldn’t want people buying a $10 beer and an $8 hot dog during our sacred anthem. All TV camera crews must stop filming and direct attention at the flag too. Just seems fair.” He later added, “Forced patriotism is the opposite of freedom.”

About the new policy, Trump told Fox News, “You have to stand, proudly, for the national anthem or you shouldn’t be playing. You shouldn’t be there. Maybe you shouldn’t be in the country”.

The NFL Player’s Association said the union will “review the new ‘policy’ and challenge any aspect of it that is inconsistent with the collective bargaining agreement.”

Britain’s Royal Windsor Castle to get hydro-electric power plant

Monday, July 25, 2005

Windsor Castle, one of Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom’s official residences, is to get a hydro-electric power scheme.

The £1 million project will consist of a series of under-water turbines to be installed at Romney Weir in the nearby River Thames. The system will generate 200kW, enough to meet approximately one third of the castle’s electricity needs.

The electricity from the four turbines will not be sold into the local electricity grid, but will instead be directly connected to Windsor Castle’s electrical system. It will save 600 tonnes of carbon dioxide from being released into the atmosphere every year.

The scheme was announced after it gained planning permission from the local council, the plans having been submitted in February of last year. A feasability study will now be conducted, with construction scheduled to start next year.

The Windsor Castle is not the only environmentally-friendly Royal scheme. A borehole beneath Buckingham Palace provides cold water for air-conditioning and the Duke of Edinburgh’s taxi runs on liquid petroleum gas.

Toilet Cistern Is As Important As Your Toilet Seats So Maintain It

Toilet cistern is as important as your toilet seats-so maintain it

by

lindsayhogan

When we talk about bathrooms, we just take care of our bathroom fittings and toilet seats. Then why don’t we take the same care when it comes to toilet cistern? In an average household, 40% of the water is used in bathroom and toilet cistern. You just need to be a little careful and carry out few simple but important steps to check if your toilet cistern is using more water than required, and if you find out that, it is than you can reduce the wastage of water as well as save money.

1 Fix the leaks in your toilet cistern A large amount of water can be wasted from a leaking toilet cistern. It is surprising but true that a leaking toilet cistern can waste 12 litres or more water in an hour. So if you do not notice this or ignore this situation than the amount of water wasted becomes significantly high. It is necessary that the households keep checking for leaks on regular basis and if any leaks are found one should fix them immediately. You may want to call the plumber if required. Now the question rises how do we come to that the toilet cistern is leaking. So let me tell you that most of the time a leaking cistern makes a humming sound constantly because the toilet needs to take in more water and also needs to replace the leaked water simultaneously. However, you cannot rely on this always because at times the humming sound may not be heard. If you are not sure, whether your toilet cistern is leaking than you can carry out a DYI test. All you need to do is open the cistern lid and you need to add some drops of food dye. Now after putting some food dye you notice the water in the bowl to be colored before you flush than the cistern is leaking. You can also diagnose whether there is leak or not by holding a small piece of toilet paper inner side of the bow but on the back. If the paper gets wet than, it is cleared that there is a leakage. Once you have confirmed that, there is a leak you must repair it immediately so that any further waste of water is avoided. 2 Get a dual flush cistern installed We all know what a dual flush toilet cistern is. It one mechanism that helps in saving water as it has two buttons. With the help of one button, you get a full flush and a half flush with the second button. Today most of the new planned and built houses have this system however; it is not available in the old houses. You can get them installed by calling a plumber. The reason why I am emphasizing on the dual cistern is this system uses four to six litres of water when you do a full flush and around two to three litres of water for half flush. However, the older cisterns use nearly ten litres every time you flush. So let us keep a check on our toilet cistern and save water. http://www.victorianplumbing.co.uk/Toilet-Seats.aspx http://www.victorianplumbing.co.uk/Toilets.aspx

A compilation of brief news reports for Monday, June 4, 2007.

MediaCorp Radio in Singapore has been fined 15,000 Singaporean dollars (US$9,800) over an on-air stunt in March in which female guests on a radio show were asked to remove their brassieres, and pose for video that was to be posted on the station’s website and on YouTube.

The Media Development Authority said the radio show’s hosts made improper and sexually suggestive remarks about “how fast the bras were removed, as well as the color, design and cup size of the bras, and the size of the girls’ breasts.”

Researchers at University of Malaya say they have developed an erectile dysfunction cure from walnut extract.

“It takes about an hour for the effects to set in and it will last for about four hours,” said Professor Dr. Kim Kah Hwi of the Faculty of Medicine Physiology.

So far, 40 volunteers have tried the Viagra alternative, called “N-Hanz”, with positive results, Kim said. To make one pill, it takes about 3.3 kilograms (about 7 pounds) of walnuts.

An 8-year-old Indonesian boy died after being attacked on Saturday by a Komodo Dragon at Komodo National Park on Komodo.

The boy was attacked while making a toilet stop in a bush, a park official said. “The dragon bit his waist, tossed him and dragged him. His right leg was badly scratched,” park spokesman Heru Rudiharto said. The boy then bled to death.

Attacks by Dragons on humans are rare, though the reptiles, which can grow to a length of 3 meters (9 feet), regularly kill such prey as pigs and small deer. Komodo Dragons are an endangered and protected species, and about 2,000 of them live in the wild, mainly on Komodo and nearby Rinca island.

Auto Accidents – More Than The Victim’s Suffer!

byalex

Any conscientious Auto Accident Attorney Portland OR will tell you that it’s more than just the immediate victims of an auto accident who are victims. For each person directly affected in an accident, there are others who might be indirectly impacted. Many people injured in accidents are often the sole bread-earners of the family. And as a result of an accident, they are unable to work or earn their livelihood. This causes immediate suffering to their families who depend on that income to survive.

When people of social influence, like teachers or health care workers are injured or worse in an accident, they leave behind a void that’s often difficult to fill immediately. This then leaves the people dependant on their skills vulnerable. And when a key member of a company’s team is the target of an accident, then the whole company suffers and, in some cases, the very survival of the company (and all the jobs it supports) could be in doubt.

However the worst of all these victims, as any good conscientious auto accident attorney in Portland OR would agree, would be lady justice herself if those guilty of causing the auto accident aren’t brought to justice. The justice system can be excused if law enforcement can’t find those responsible for the act. However, there’s no greater sadness for personal injury victims than to see their perpetrators go free just because they had a better accident attorney than the victim.

Sadly, the last scenario does come true more often than victims would like. And one of the main reasons for that is the casual attitude towards searching for and engaging a qualified lawyer to represent the victim. Unless victims of personal injury and auto accidents actively search for the best auto Accident Attorney in Portland OR to represent them, they will likely not see justice done to their cases.

It’s not enough to pick up the Yellow Pages or to do a Google search for the first available attorney near you. Personal referrals from friends and family certainly help. However, most reputable attorney’s offer free consultations to prospective clients. If you are looking for an auto accident attorney to represent you, a friend or a family member, it is highly recommended that you take advantage of such free consultations to get to know the lawyer before engaging him or her.

But most importantly, look for an attorney who has been practicing law for a couple of decades at least, and whose area of speciality is in auto accidents of all types, car, motorcycle, truck, bicycle, drunk driving etc. If your prospective lawyer is a lifetime member of the Million Dollar Advocates Forum, that would certainly give you a significant advantage over any “high profile” attorneys that some perpetrators can afford.

Arthur Miller specializes in personal injury, amongst other cases, and is an auto accident attorney in Portland OR. Contact him and benefit from his 28+ years of auto accident experience at Accidentsonly.com
