Tips for Renting a Car When You Are Under 25

Sometimes it might seem impossible for a young person under 25 to rent a car in his or her name. Some of the rental companies provide the opportunity of renting in these cases, but the prices will be higher. You can find very easily such a company by checking out the websites of different companies. It is always a good idea to search the comparison websites for the reason they will offer you all the information you need as well as the best rates. There are many risks involved when renting a car to someone underage and thus the renting companies are usually careful about this. Sometimes they will ask you to deposit some extra money as an additional insurance or they might require you to come with somebody over 25 to sign as a guarantee.

Perhaps the most convenient way to get to your destination from an airport is by renting a car and not by using the public transport means. The most important thing when you use a rented car is that the required car will be accessible instantaneously after your landing, you will save good money and you will not need to wait as you usually have to when using public vehicles. In order to get the best prices for your rented car, you should try to book it in advance and take advantage of the discounts offered. When you book your car, make sure you explore all the weekly and the weekend rates as well as the possibility of getting some discounts for long term renting. As you can see, it is easy to get a good airport rental service mainly if you make your own research to see which company suits you best.

Rent a Car in Europe

People who would like to visit Europe should be aware that by renting a car for their vacation they will definitely see much more of the attractions there. You should not be worried about the renting process, since it is similar to that from the U. S. Online booking in advance, as in the USA, can give you the opportunity to pick a car from a wider choice at best rates, especially if you plan to explore the European continent off-season. Note that if you include UK in your European itinerary, you need to pay attention to driving on the left side of the road. Always make sure you have valid car insurance when travelling in Europe with a rented car, since the money you will need to pay in case of accident or damage to the car can be very much.

Discounts and Coupons When Renting a Car

When speaking about renting a car, many people would like to discover ways to pay less on their chosen vehicle. The coupons and the discounts are the greatest way to acquire the cheapest price when using the car rental services. In most of the situations, you will need to meet certain requirements in order to be eligible for such discounts, because they will not be offered to you completely for free. You can join a car rental club and that way your membership will offer you different vouchers and codes for better prices. If you have no such membership, you can look for them at the hotels you are checking in. It is always recommended to read the terms and conditions carefully in order to make sure you are aware of the restrictions that might apply.

Wikinews interviews New Zealand Paralympic skier Adam Hall

Wednesday, December 19, 2012

Recently, Wikinews spent time with with New Zealand Paralympic skier Adam Hall who was at Copper Mountain, Colorado for the IPC Nor-Am Cup.

((Wikinews)) We’re interviewing famous Kiwi Paralympic legend Adam Hall, Paralympic skier. What classification are you?

Adam Hall: An LW1.

((WN)) LW1. So you are a standing skier?

Adam Hall: Stand up skier.

((WN)) And how does a Kiwi end up skiing? Because it’s not known as the world’s greatest country for skiing.

Adam Hall: Oh, actually we have quite a lot of good resources down in New Zealand for skiing and a lot of world class athletes and countries from all over the world come down to New Zealand and train during the off season. So, actually, kind of world-renowned for skiing.

((WN)) New Zealand’s had a couple of really famous skiers compared to their neighbour [Australia], right?

Adam Hall: Yeah I guess so. Especially in the able bodied world. Back in the early 90s we had some good success at the Olympic medal.

((WN)) You’re the most decorated New Zealand Paralympian on the winter side?

Adam Hall: Uh, no, not yet. We’ve also had a very successful Winter Paralympics ski racing team also in the 90s as well and also in the 80s as well when Paralympic skiing first evolved. We have had quite a successful team over the years, and we try to continue that[?].

((WN)) Are you from the South Island?

Adam Hall: From the South Island.

((WN)) So you ski in Otago?

Adam Hall: Yeah, I am from Otago and I train out of Wanaka.

((WN)) After the Summer Olympics, your government had all sorts of budget issues. Has that impacted the Paralympic stuff on the winter side or in general, or is it just the Olympics where they are like “we don’t want to fund everything”?

Adam Hall: I’d much rather stay out of all that political side of things, and I don’t really know much about it…

((WN)) They are giving you money to ski?

Adam Hall: Based on your results you’re pretty well supported, and you have to obviously show your results to get the kind of resources and help. If you’re successful you’re lucky enough to get world class resources to help you along.

((WN)) Do you think you’re better resourced than, say, the Americans?

Adam Hall: It’s hard to say what each country gets, but I’m really happy and definitely privileged to have the support that I have behind me.

((WN)) Are you going to go to Sochi?

Adam Hall: Definitely, yeah. That what my eyes are set on at the moment and it’s for Sochi in 2014.

((WN)) Have you qualified points-wise points already?

Adam Hall: Yeah, right now I have the qualifications and [?] points to qualify for the games.

((WN)) What’s your favourite skiing events?

Adam Hall: Slalom and Super G, and the two combined.

((WN)) It’s because you like to go fast?

Adam Hall: I like to go fast and I like the technical things as well.

((WN)) Anything that people should know about disability sport in New Zealand?

Adam Hall: No, not really, the whole disability world, world-wide, is moving in a positive way and continues to when you look back in previous years with people with disabilities were kind of classed as second-hand[?] citizens and it is moving in a positive way and continues to.

((WN)) Okay, cool. Thank you very much.

Ten-ton ice cube melting in Seattle park

Saturday, September 10, 2016

A cube of ice, weighing about ten tons (about 9000 kg) and measuring 80 inches (2m) per side, is melting in Seattle, Washington’s Occidental Park. The temporary art installation, set up yesterday morning, “showcases the stages of the natural water cycle as the ice shifts from opaque to translucent”, the artists said.

The project is part of the Seattle Design Festival, and was designed by Olson Kundig Architects’ Clay Anderson, Noah Conlay, Jarri Hasnain, Gregory Nakata, and Mark Olthoff. Crews began assembling blocks yesterday morning and had stacked all 64 blocks in place by 8:00 am.

It is not certain how long the 64 blocks of ice that make up the cube will take to melt, and discovering how the process unfolds is part of the intent. Olson Kundig contacted University of Washington meteorologist Cliff Mass to try to estimate the time it would take to melt, which Mass called “not a trivial calculation”. He said the variables included how much sun warms the block, in turn dependent on cloud cover; condensation on the block’s surface, thus variables like humidity, temperature, and wind; and heat conduction, both from the ground and from the surrounding air.

The installation inspired photographers at The Seattle Times, and under the hashtag #ok_icecube at Instagram and Twitter.

Madagascar leader names army officer as prime minister

Monday, December 21, 2009

Madagascar’s leader, Andry Rajoelina, has named a high-ranking army officer as the country’s new prime minister, and announced he is abandoning a power-sharing deal with the opposition.

Mr. Rajoelina’s office announced Sunday that Colonel Camille Albert Vital would serve as the new prime minister, replacing Eugene Mangalaza, who was supposed to be prime minister under the deal. Previously he had been expected to make Cecile Manorohanta the new prime minister. He also abolished the posts of co-president.

In a nationally broadcast address, Colonel Vital said that organising elections and increasing security were his priorities. He called on the people of Madagascar, including political rivals, to work with his government.

Mr. Rajoelina took power in a coup last March. On Wednesday, he appeared on national television to announce that parliamentary elections would take place March 20 next year. He made no mention of presidential elections.

International mediators have brokered several power-sharing agreements in recent months, but all have been unsuccessful. The African Union and other regional bodies have refused to recognize Mr. Rajoelina’s presidency.

Scientology protest group celebrates founder’s birthday worldwide

Correction — March 19, 2008 The next protest is scheduled for April 12, 2008. The article below states April 18 which is incorrect.

Saturday, March 15, 2008

The Internet group Anonymous today held further protests critical of the Church of Scientology.

The global protests started in Australia where several hundred protesters gathered at different locations for peaceful protests.

In a global speech, the Internet protest movement said Scientology “betrayed the trust of its members, [had] taken their money, their rights, and at times their very lives.” The protesters welcomed the public interest their protests have led to, and claimed they witnessed “an unprecedented flood of Scientologists [joining] us across the world to testify about these abuses.” The group said it would continue with monthly actions.

In a press statement from its European headquarters, Scientology accused the anonymous protesters of “hate speech and hate crimes”, alleging that security measures were necessary because of death threats and bomb threats. This also makes the Church want to “identify members” of the group it brands as “cyber-terrorists”.

Wikinews had correspondents in a number of protest locations to report on the events.

Anonymous states that the next protest is scheduled to take place on April 18, which happens to be the birthday of Suri, the daughter of Tom and Katie Cruise.

Pop-artist James Rosenquist dies aged 83
Posted by , No Comments

Monday, April 3, 2017

Well-known pop art figure James Rosenquist died on Friday, his family announced, in his New York City home after a long illness, at the age of 83.

Mr Rosenquist leaves behind a legacy of involvement in the pop art movement, playing a pivotal role in the movement’s conception in the 1960s. His career as a heyday pop-artist was defined by his billboard painting style which incorporated subject matter from popular culture and the mass media and created large scale artworks.

Although his works were rarely politically charged, his best-known work, the 1964/1965 F-111, used a combination of war imagery and everyday influences to protest US militarism in relation to the Vietnam War. It now resides in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

The 1960s pop art movement was defined by artists like Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, contemporaries of Mr. Rosenquist. Although part of the same art movement, Rosenquist wrote in his 2009 autobiography, Painting Below Zero: Notes on a Life in Art, that he was less interested in “logos or brand names”, and more concerned with creating what he described as “mysterious pictures”.

Skeletons found under home in Hertfordshire

Skeletons found under home in Hertfordshire
Posted by , No Comments

Wednesday, April 23, 2008

Catherine McGuigan, a resident in South Mimms, Hertfordshire, UK, found skeletons from over a century ago buried under her dining room.

She had hired builders for an extension for her cottage, where she has lived for eleven years, and at the beginning of April they found human bones in the ground.

Her cottage was built over a burial ground; from 1697 to 1820 the land was owned by the Religious Society of Friends. In the 1600s, members of the society, better known as Quakers, were persecuted for their beliefs and so were not allowed to be buried in consecrated church grounds. Instead burials, which were also sometimes for others not recognised as parishioners – such as homeless people, often took place in the countryside.

The Daily Mail states in its April article that the Religious Society of Friends have advised McGuigan that she “must cremate” the bodies, however Quakers have written an open letter to the Daily Mail, informing that for Quakers, there is “no specific advice on the disposal of bodies”, and that they had never expressed an opinion on how the discovered skeletons should be buried.

The cremation was rumoured to cost up to £32,000 – an £800 quote for cremation of a single body multiplied by 40, however as yet only ten bodies have been discovered.

The builders originally thought the bones were pieces of pipe, and McGuigan has now ordered coffins and is looking to holding a mass cremation or a burial in a nearby field.

Japanese earthquake death toll surpasses ten thousand

Japanese earthquake death toll surpasses ten thousand
Posted by , No Comments

Friday, March 25, 2011

The death toll from the Sendai earthquake has now increased to over ten thousand. In Japan, the National Police Agency has stated that 10,019 are now known to have been killed as a result of the disaster.

The Agency also reported that 2,775 had been injured and the location of 17,541 individuals was unknown. Meanwhile, 1,900 evacuation sites are now thought to be occupied by approximately a quarter of a million people.

When the event happened two weeks ago, 18,000 thousand households were destroyed and 130,000 were damaged by the earthquake and the subsequent tsunami. In spite of this, twelve of the fifteen north-eastern ports of Japan have recommenced operating, while the majority of the oil terminals of the country remained open, according to Inchcape Shipping Services.

Amongst the aftermath of the earthquake, plant number 3 at the Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plant is suspected to have been damaged and may be releasing radiation. The Japanese government have reported that an ongoing investigation is occurring to attempt to discover the cause of the radiation leak at the power plant. Chinese authorities have reported two Japanese tourists were found to have levels of radiation “seriously exceeding limits” on their clothing and luggage. In Tokyo, the amount of radiation in the supply of water has decreased, however it remains high in various parts of the north of Japan.

According to BBC News Online, two workers were hospitalised because of the leak. The Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), who operate the building, reported that three employees placing electrical cables at the location were given treatment for being exposed to radioactive water; they had experienced ten thousand times the regular amount of radioactivity. Of those three men, beta rays caused two of them to receive burns. The two individuals did not stop working despite meters advising of unsafe radiation levels. It was later discovered that they were wearing inadequate protective footwear and failed to draw their attention to a radiation alert. TEPCO has since received government orders to improve worker management.

The radiation emitted from the plant has had a significant effect on the Japanese food industry. In the surrounding areas of the plant, shipments of foodstuffs have been prohibited. In Fukushima prefecture, residents have been advised not to consume eleven leafy green vegetable types produced locally due to radiation concerns. There has also been a significant decrease in customer demand at a fish market in Tsukiji.

Japanese product importers have discovered some foodstuffs to have a small radiation amount, which is not thought to be potentially deadly. Numerous Asian countries, the European Union, Australia, Russia and the United States have prohibited milk items, seafood and vegetables from being imported from various Japanese prefectures.

Closing the power plant down may take at least one month to achieve. Speaking to AFP, an individual talking on behalf of TEPCO stated that the company is “still in the process of assessing the damage at the plant, so that we can’t put a deadline on when the cooling operations will work again”. Residents living within thirty kilometres of the plant have been advised to avoid going outdoors to attempt to prevent radiation exposure as far as possible.
