Most Tokyo power restored after blackout

Sunday, August 13, 2006

A power outage hit large parts of Tokyo, and Chiba, Japan. The electrical blackout occurred due to an industrial accident, in which a crane damaged some power lines accidentally at 7:40 AM local time (2240 UTC), the Kyodo News agency reported, quoting Tokyo Power Electric Co. Power was reported to have been restored to most areas within a few hours.

At least two elevators stopped with an unknown number of people trapped inside, said a fire official in Tokyo. Some train services were halted. The number of passengers was lower than normal due to a holiday. About 800,000 residences were affected by the blackout, according to the power company. Most services have since then been restored.

Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea delayed opening by an hour as many rides did not function due to the power problems.

Violence at Cronulla Beach as 5000 people gather

Monday, December 12, 2005

Cronulla Beach in Sydney, New South Wales was the scene of racist mob-violence yesterday. In what has been described as disgusting, un-Australian and shameful behaviour, participants in a 5000-strong mob assaulted people suspected of being of Lebanese origin. The angry, alcohol-fuelled crowd also turned on anyone who tried to help the victims, including police, security guards and ambulance officers.

Following an attack on two lifeguards earlier in the week, allegedly by men of Lebanese descent, a protest had been organised via text messages and a small number of usenet postings.

Sutherland Shire Mayor Kevin Schreiber says inflammatory text messages calling for revenge attacks fueled the violence. Mr Schreiber said the heavily-circulated messages ensured troublemakers went to the southern Sydney beach looking for a fight. Police had patrolled the area all weekend after text messages began circulating among the community calling for vigilante responses to unwelcome visitors on the beach.

“The sending out of that text message was foolish and irresponsible and ensured that people from all over Sydney came to Cronulla looking to cause trouble and this was further fueled by alcohol,” said Mr Schreiber.

Sydney’s popular talk-back radio station 2GB also promoted Sunday’s event. Breakfast announcer Alan Jones has been accused of “fanning the flames.” Callers who recommended vigilante action were not discouraged to take the law into their own hands. Mr Jones, notorious for inflammatory comments, repeated the text message for Cronulla residents to defend their territory several times.

As the crowd marched along the beach and foreshore area, waving Australian flags, the crowd chanted racist slogans, with many wearing clothes bearing racist sentiment.

Middle Eastern men were openly targeted and assaulted. A young Muslim woman wearing a veil was chased into a kiosk on Cronulla beach. Police tried to move her away from the chanting crowd but were unable to reach the security of the command post. While the woman and police officers hid in the kiosk, a crowd surrounded the kiosk and shouted “Kill the Lebs”, while others climbed on top of the kiosk.

As police horses and special operations officers formed a line and pushed the crowd away, they were bombarded with beer bottles. After half an hour, an ambulance arrived at the kiosk and people were loaded into it. The ambulance, transporting six injured youths, escorted by police and police horses, was also bombarded with beer bottles. One struck an ambulance officer on the head. His colleague suffered lacerations to the arm.

Microorganisms that live in the bloodstream of humans are called blood borne pathogens. They are a major cause of various types of illness and disease in humans. They can be transmitted through exposure to contaminated blood. If even the smallest amount of blood contaminated with blood borne pathogens enters your bloodstream, you can contract whatever disease is in that blood. In fact, contamination through the blood is almost a guarantee, depending on the disease. Some of these pathogens can be contracted in other ways, without blood-to-blood transference. Some examples of blood transference include a blood transfusion, blood spatter contacting the eyes, mouth, or mucus membranes in the nose, or allowing contaminated blood to come into contact with your skin where there is a break or cut in the skin.

The Many Ways Of Contracting BBP

There are many ways that blood pathogens can be transmitted from person to person. Blood pathogens can exist on needles, razors, a non-sterilized scalpel, or even broken glass or jagged edged rocks. If you come into contact with any of the objects that have been contaminated with blood borne pathogens, seek emergency medical assistance immediately. If you have an open cut or abrasion that comes into contact with any blood or even other common bodily fluids like sperm or mucus, you can contract a blood borne disease. Sexual relations is one of the most common ways to transmit disease.

The Many Myths Of Contracting BBP

There are just as many myths about how you can contract a blood borne pathogen, as there are ways to contract one. A good for instance of this is the pool scare of the early 1990s as all across the world, public pools were shut down when a news report raised the question of whether AIDS could be contracted from swimming in the same swimming pool as a person with HIV. HIV is a very weak disease as far as infection goes. For instance, the HIV virus is not found in urine. However, Hepatitis is very infectious. If a swimming pool is not treated with chlorine and other chemicals that all pools are supposed to be treated with, the chance of contracting a blood borne pathogen exists. All public pools are supposed to be treated with these chemicals. This is especially true of state or local government controlled pools.

Variations Of Blood Borne Pathogens

Some blood borne pathogens are more infectious than others are. You cannot contract AIDS or Hepatitis from a mosquito bite but you can contract other blood borne pathogens, such as malaria. You cannot contract a blood borne pathogen by sitting on a toilet seat that a carrier of a blood borne pathogen has used. Blood borne pathogens are not airborne so they cannot be contracted from sneezing or coughing. You cannot contract a blood borne pathogen from just touching someone unless you have an open wound and you touch their blood.

Common Sense And Blood Borne Pathogens

There are many diseases that are considered blood borne pathogens and more are being discovered every year. As the list of these diseases continues to grow, the need for public awareness becomes more important. Everyone should know how to protect them selves from blood contamination but there is no substitute for common sense. If you know someone who has a blood borne pathogen, do not be afraid. Take every precaution to avoid contact with anything that could have blood contamination.

MetLife to acquire Travelers Life and Annuity from Citigroup

Monday, January 31, 2005

Metlife announced on 01/31/05 that they were going to acquire Travelers Life and Annuity from Citigroup. Travelers Life and Annuity is an insurance underwriter. MetLife is a large life insurance and annuities underwriter. MetLife will have to borrow a lot of money to pay for the company, so rating agencies like S&P warn that the AA credit rating of MetLife might be lowered. This would cause the interest rates at which all of MetLife’s debt must be repaid to increase.

Citigroup committed to continue distributing Travelers life insurance and annuities through its Smith Barney stock brokers, Primerica agents, and Citibank branches.

Citigroup was previously known as Travelers Insurance before it bought Citicorp. First the Property and Casualty business of Travelers was spun off, and now the life insurance division has been sold off. This is primarily because insurance underwriters get a lower price to earnings multiple from the stock market because of the cycles and uncertainty associated with the insurance business. Also, having an insurance underwriter and a bank together does not usually create “cross-sell” opportunities, because consumers and businesses almost always buy life insurance and annuities through brokers who have a duty to give them other options. Citigroup will continue to sell insurance through its brokers as before.

Today, United States Senator Ted Kennedy underwent surgery for a brain tumor at Duke University Medical Center. Kennedy, 76, was diagnosed with malignant glioma, a common but dangerous form of cancer, after suffering a seizure on May 17.

Kennedy has met repeatedly with friend and medical advisor Dr. Lawrence C. Horowitz to plan a course of treatment. The first, of the major phases of that treatment has now been completed, and it is expected that chemotherapy and radiotherapy will follow.

“I am pleased to report that Senator Kennedy’s surgery was successful and accomplished our goals,” said Dr. Allan Friedman, the chief of neurosurgery at Duke, who performed the surgery. “After a brief recuperation, he will begin targeted radiation at Massachusetts General Hospital and chemotherapy treatment,” Friedman added.

In talks with the press, the senator has focused on his future beyond surgery. In a prepared statement issued by his office, Kennedy stated, “after completing treatment, I look forward to returning to the United States Senate and to doing everything I can to help elect Barack Obama as our next president.”

Top 6 Ways To Distribute Your Surveys To Get Quality Feedback Responses

“Survey is a process of collecting data by asking certain questions to the group of individuals. A Customer Survey involves obtaining Customer Feedback by asking certain questions from your customers about your products, services and the overall Customer Experience with your organization.”

Gone are the days when the surveys were taken by approaching the customers physically with a pen and a paper questionnaire and then filling the survey forms. Nowadays, a popular method of obtaining Customer Feedback is to take surveys using different digital channels through a Survey App.

Now the question arises, what is the right way or medium to distribute your surveys in order to get quality feedback responses. You design your survey and customize it with the help of a good Survey App, but are wondering the best way to distribute your survey?

Well, it would not be wrong to say that the success of a survey majorly depends on the response rate of the survey. And to get a good response rate, it is necessary to send the survey the right way and through the right mediums.

Let’s list out some effective ways to distribute your surveys so that you can get a good response rate with high-quality feedback responses.

Top Ways to Distribute Your Surveys to Get Quality Feedback Responses

  1. Email Surveys
  2. SMS Surveys
  3. Online Surveys
  4. Survey post a help Article or a Blog
  5. Surveys Embedded in Blogs
  6. Social Media Surveys

Let us review how you can use these channels in an effective way to receive quality feedback response data with a great response rate.

1. Email Surveys

Email Survey is the most commonly used method to obtain survey data. Being a method involving establishment of direct contact with your customer, email is the first method which comes to most peoples’ mind when talking about taking surveys digitally.

The biggest advantage of this way of distributing your survey is that you can distribute your survey to a large number of people in a matter of few clicks. By using a good survey app, you can customize your survey and send through emails which further increases the effectiveness of the survey.

Email has a very good read and response rate. Email surveys not only enable you to send surveys to multiple people with ease, but also enables your customers to fill the survey and send response as per their convenience of time and place.

2. SMS Surveys

SMS Surveys are surveys administered to collect the survey data through Small Messaging Service(SMS). SMS surveys have proven to be an extremely effective and the most efficient way to capture Customer Feedback.

“SMS Surveys has the highest read rate, even more than the Email surveys.”

Help articles and blogs are an important component of any website. When you post a help article or a blog, you can provide links of survey just below the article or the blog. You can also add some such content in your blogs and articles which helps to motivate the readers to take the survey.

Moreover, you can especially write short blogs and articles to motivate customers to fill the survey. In these short blogs and articles, you can tell the importance of providing Customer Feedback through surveys. You can explain the customers how taking surveys and providing feedback will help you to satisfy them in a better way.

5. Embedded in a Blog

You can also embed a survey link in your blog. For instance, you are running a health care center and you are writing an article on prevention of a certain disease and if someone catches that disease, how your health care center can cure it effectively.

In the same blog, you can embed your survey link in appropriate places. You can ask about certain health aspects in that survey and how aware the people are about the disease and its cure. You can take Patient Feedback also from the people who have been a patient in your center.

6. Social Media Surveys

Social media is a great medium nowadays, be it for promoting your organization or for gathering Customer Feedback data. Whenever you write a blog or a help article, make sure that you promote it on social media along with the survey links provided either below the article or embedded in the blog itself.

Moreover, whenever you are organizing a program or an event, it is important to promote it on social media and ask for the views and the opinions of the customers regarding that. Likewise, if you are organizing a major survey, you should use social media platforms to promote your survey.

In the promotion, concentrate on how in the survey, the customers can share their views, opinions, and feedback and how it will help you to serve them better. This will encourage the customers to share genuine feedback and their views about your brand.

HIV-positive man receives 35 years for spitting on Dallas police officer

HIV-positive man receives 35 years for spitting on Dallas police officer
Posted by Admin , No Comments

Sunday, May 18, 2008

An HIV-positive man was sentenced to 35 years in prison Wednesday, one day after being convicted of harassment of a public servant for spitting into the eye and open mouth of a Dallas, Texas police officer in May 2006. The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that no one has ever contracted HIV from saliva, and a gay-rights and AIDS advocacy group called the sentence excessive.

A Dallas County jury concluded that Willie Campbell’s act of spitting on policeman Dan Waller in 2006 constituted the use of his saliva as a deadly weapon. The incident occurred while Campbell, 42, was resisting arrest while being taken into custody for public intoxication.

“He turns and spits. He hits me in the eye and mouth. Then he told me he has AIDS. I immediately began looking for something to flush my eyes with,” said Waller to The Dallas Morning News.

Officer Waller responded after a bystander reported seeing an unconscious male lying outside a building. Dallas County prosecutors stated that Campbell attempted to fight paramedics and kicked the police officer who arrested him for public intoxication.

It’s been 25 years since the virus was identified, but there are still lots of fears.

Prosecutors said that Campbell yelled that he was innocent during the trial, and claimed a police officer was lying. Campbell’s lawyer Russell Heinrichs said that because he had a history of convictions including similarly attacking two other police officers, biting inmates, and other offenses, he was indicted under a habitual offender statute. The statute increased his minimum sentence to 25 years in prison. Because the jury ruled that Campbell’s saliva was used as a deadly weapon, he will not be eligible for parole until completing at least half his sentence.

If you look at the facts of this case, it was clear that the defendant intended to cause serious bodily injury.

The organization Lambda Legal (Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund), which advocates for individuals living with HIV, says that saliva should not be considered a deadly weapon. Bebe Anderson, the HIV projects director at Lambda Legal, spoke with The Dallas Morning News about the sentence. “It’s been 25 years since the virus was identified, but there are still lots of fears,” said Anderson.

The Dallas County prosecutor who handled the trial, Jenni Morse, said that the deadly weapon finding was justified. “No matter how minuscule, there is some risk. That means there is the possibility of causing serious bodily injury or death,” said Morse. Dallas County District Attorney Craig Watkins stated: “If you look at the facts of this case, it was clear that the defendant intended to cause serious bodily injury.”

Contact with saliva, tears, or sweat has never been shown to result in transmission of HIV.

A page at the CDC’s website, HIV and Its Transmission, states: “HIV has been found in saliva and tears in very low quantities from some AIDS patients.” The subsection “Saliva, Tears, and Sweat” concludes that: “Contact with saliva, tears, or sweat has never been shown to result in transmission of HIV.” On Friday the Dallas County Health Department released a statement explaining that HIV is most commonly spread through sexual contact, sharing needles, or transfusion from an infected blood product.

TGV makes 574.8 km/h on rails

TGV makes 574.8 km/h on rails
Posted by Admin , No Comments

Tuesday, April 3, 2007

A French Train à Grande Vitesse (High-Speed Train or TGV) has smashed the world record for a train on conventional rails by a big margin, reaching 574.8km/h (356mph) The TGV travelled over 59.8 km/h (36 mph) faster than its previous record of 515 km/h (320 mph)

The record attempt by a modified TGV took place on a track between Paris and the eastern city of Strasbourg. However, this is not the fastest train speed. A Japanese Maglev (Magnetive Levitation Train) reached a top speed of 581km/h (361mph) in 2003. The TGV made history at 13:14 CEST (11:14 UTC). The TGV had been modfied and was called V150 – a TGV with larger wheels than usual and two engines driving three double-decker cars. The vehicle’s horsepower was 25,000.

Reporters said the three train drivers were seen grinning on French TV after they realised they had broken the record. The TGV travelled almost as fast as a World War II Spitfire fighter at top speed. Even the electrical tension in the overhead cable was increased 6000 volts from 25,000 volts to 31,000 for the record attempt.

“We saw the countryside go by a little faster than we did during the tests,” engineer Eric Pieczac said.

“Everything went very well. There are about 10,000 engineers who would want to be in my place,” Mr Pieczac said. “It makes me very happy, a mixed feeling of pride and honour to be able to reach this speed.” Since their introduction in 1981, TGVs generally travel at about 300km/h (187.5 mph) however, on the recently opened Paris-Strasbourg LGV (Ligne à Grande Vitesse or High-Speed line) trains will travel at 320 km/h (200 mph)

SNCF and Alstom – the TGV’s manufacturer – have said that the record test was performed to see how a TGV would react in extreme conditions – conditions that cannot be performed in a laboratory.

After the record was broken, French President Jacques Chirac conveyed his congratulations on “this new proof of the excellence of the French rail industry.” The President also said that “Economically efficient and respectful of the environment, the TGV is a major asset in efforts to ensure sustainable development in transport

“What is important for us today is to prove that the TGV technology which was invented in France 30 years ago is a technology for the future,” said Guillaume Pepy

Alstom plans to increase TGV sales abroad, where it is competing with high-speed trains such as the Japanese Shinkansen and the German ICE. Currently, nations of the Far East such as China, South Korea, Japan and Taiwan are the “top” customers for high-speed trains. Agence France-Presse said that a high-speed rail link in between Los Angeles and San Francisco, California was being looked into.
