Calvin Murphy acquitted of molestation charges

Monday, December 6, 2004

Former Houston Rockets star Calvin Murphy, accused of molestation by five of daughters, was found not guilty by the jury, putting an end to the eight-month long trial.

The alleged incidents took place more than ten years ago, when the daughters, who are now grown, ranged in age from 6 to 16. They accused Murphy of fondling them and performing oral sex on them. Murphy has 14 children by nine women.

Murphy’s attorney claimed that the women’s accusations were false and that they were bitter because he did not treat them the same as he treated the children born to his ex-wife. Murphy’s two daughters who were products of his previous marriage came to his defense.

The jury indicated that they found the women’s statements unreliable. The former basketball star’s lawyers said three of the five daughters had been trying to claim $52,408 in death benefits left in a teachers retirement account belonging to their mother, Phyllis Davidson. Murphy had a 20-year relationship and four children with Davidson, who died in a car accident in 1996.

This year, the three daughters continued their grandmother’s attempt to stop Murphy from receiving the benefits. He was listed as the account’s beneficiary, according to court records.

On Feb. 20, letters went to Murphy, his three daughters and their grandmother that Murphy was the account’s rightful beneficiary. The money was never paid.

A month later, Murphy was arrested and charged with sexual abuse and indecency.

Because of the nature of the accusations, Murphy lost his job with the Houston Rockets, where he was a TV commentator. Murphy has not commented about if he has plans to return to a broadcasting career.

Canterbury farmers to get aid because of snow

Tuesday, June 27, 2006

The New Zealand government officials have announced that it will give NZ$160,000 in aid to help farmers who were affected by the huge amounts of snow in Canterbury, New Zealand two weeks ago.

The aid package will provide four regional offices for co-ordination, food supplies and ongoing support.

The Federated Farmers for mid Canterbury say that the aid will be a start to what looks like a tough winter. President of the mid Canterbury Federated Farmers Rupert Curd says, “It is too early to say exactly how much help the relief package will provide.”

The snow has not yet reached a crisis point.

The Insurance Council has estimated the cost of the snow storm has reached $35 million so far. Chief Executive of the Insurance Council says, “There has been damage to homes, commercial premises both on farms and in town and vehicles. Businesspeople who have been without power are also claiming for loss of income.”

The Minister of Agriculture Jim Anderton has said that they are not ruling out giving further aid.

Use Life Insurance\’s Cash Value For Some Of Your Retirement Income

by

Shane Flait

With a few years left before your retirement, consider contributing more to your life insurance for future income use. Life insurance can help you shore up your retirement income shortfall. Here\’s how…

You can project how much additional retirement income you\’ll need. Just determine the amount of income you\’d need to cover your living expenses for you and you spouse. From that, subtract your Social Security and pension income.

Then consider how much savings you have and what annual income you can pull from them without depleting your savings. Subtract that \’savings income\’ too. Whatever shortfall remains to cover your living expenses is what you must generate from more savings. You might consider using your life insurance to do this.

Life insurance is an investment that has value, growth potential, diversity and protection. It, along with its cash value, can help you supply the extra retirement income you\’ll need in later years.

Clearly, the first purpose of life insurance is to provide a death benefit to a beneficiary – perhaps your spouse. She\’ll receive the death benefit free of income tax. So, if you die before saving enough for your spouse\’s income, carrying enough life insurance is the solution.

Pick up an optional total disability benefit rider – often available on whole life and universal life – that can help fund the policy to provide retirement income even if you become disabled.

Your policy\’s cash value can provide you with tax-free cash either through withdrawals or policy loans. Of course loans and withdrawals will reduce the policy\’s death benefit and cash value, but you may purposely overfund the policy just so you can access some cash when you need it.

A benefit of using life insurance as a savings vehicle is the tax-deferred growth of the cash value. The dividends it pays and withdrawals you take are considered a return of your premiums (i.e. your contributions).

Only when you pull more out than you contributed will you generate taxable income. Also, if you\’ve added large amounts of premiums to the policy, the IRS then calls it a Modified Endowment Contract which is considered a savings vehicles rather than life insurance. In that case, the dividends are taxable as income to the extent there is gain in the policy. However, any dividends applied to reduce the policy\’s annual premium or to buy additional insurance remain untaxable.

Unlike other tax-deferred retirement plans, you\’re not limited in the yearly contributions you make. And, you\’re also not obliged to make minimum required distributions after reaching age 701/2.

Hope fades for families of trapped Mexican miners

Wednesday, February 22, 2006

Almost 600 desperate family members and others remained camped outside the Pasta de Conchos coal mine near San Juan de Sabinas, in the northern Mexico state of Coahuila where 65 Mexican miners were trapped by a gas explosion around 2:30 a.m. (0830 GMT) Sunday. Some are threatening to storm the mine while soldiers are trying to keep them calm and rescuers continue to pick through the rock and debris with hand tools, fearing that any power equipment might set off another explosion.

The local newspaper’s headline caused panic by quoting one of over a dozen surviving miners who were close enough to the exits to escape: “They are surely dead,” (La Prensa de Monclova). However, Arturo Vilchis, Civil Protection Director, refused to speculate on the condition of the miners, while Javier de la Fuente, an engineering contractor with mine owner Grupo México S.A. de C.V. also tried to hold out some hope.

The men were each supposed to be carrying oxygen tanks, each with a six hour supply, and there’s some hope that they could reach other oxygen supply tanks, or that some air might be reaching them through the ventilation shafts into which rescuers have been pumping more oxygen since shortly after the explosion.

Juan Rebolledo, vice president of international affairs for Grupo México, assured onlookers that U.S. mining experts were on the way, and officials at the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration have confirmed that they’ve sent a specialized equipment truck and several mining experts which should arrive at the mine site on Wednesday afternoon.

Meanwhile Consuelo Aguilar, a spokeswoman for the National Miners’ Union, called for an investigation into Grupo México’s responsibility for the disaster. Pedro Camarillo, a federal labor official, said nothing unusual was found during a routine evaluation in early February.

Deadly fire below US President’s Trump Tower residence

Tuesday, April 10, 2018

On Saturday, the Trump Tower, in Midtown, New York City, caught fire shortly before 18:00 EST (2200 UTC) on the 50th floor, claiming the life of a 67-year-old resident, Todd Brassner, who lived in apartment 50C. All other residents were evacuated without incident. During the fire, six firefighters received non-life-threatening burns and other minor injuries. Neither US President Donald Trump nor the First Family were in the building at the time of the fire.

The high-end Fifth Avenue address is the personal residence of President Donald Trump, whose family occupies the top three stories of the 58-story building. The US Secret Service maintains a constant security presence inside the building with the New York City Police Department guarding a hard perimeter, intended to stop vehicular attacks, and a soft perimeter, intended for on-foot attacks.

The four-alarm fire required 200 firemen, extra police, and paramedics. At 20:00 EST (0000 UTC Sunday), the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) declared the fire was under control. Trump tweeted, “Firemen (and women) did a great job. THANK YOU!” This is the second fire at Trump Tower since the election; previously on January 8, a fire was caused by an electrical malfunction in a cooling tower on the roof. Three FDNY firefighters received minor injuries, and all residents and office workers evacuated without incident on that occasion.

Trump Tower provides a number of unique problems never before encountered by the Secret Service. Never has a US President’s personal residence been inside a skyscraper or in a densely populated area like Midtown. The security measures have disrupted vehicular and pedestrian traffic requiring time consuming detours and delaying emergency response.

The New York Fire Code did not mandate sprinkler systems at the time Trump Tower was built in 1983, which might have reduced the size and severity of the fire had they been present. The 50th-floor apartment was, according to FDNY Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro, “[T]he apartment was virtually, entirely on fire.” The Secret Service monitors all the fire alarms in the building but it took time to find the source of the thick black smoke emanating from the fire. Secret Service Agents escorted the firefighters throughout the building, including the Trump residence.

Brassner, the sole casualty, was unconscious when firefighters pulled him out of apartment 50C. He was transported to Mount Sinai Roosevelt Hospital. Originally listed as critical, he was pronounced dead sometime during the night. Brassner, guitar collector, was acquainted with artist Andy Warhol and was acknowledged in Warhol’s 1989 autobiography, The Andy Warhol Diaries. The cause of the fire is unknown, with investigations into Brassner’s death and the emergency response ongoing. Currently, the Secret Service leads the investigation.

United States: Two killed, more than a hundred injured in Amtrak train collision in South Carolina

Wednesday, February 7, 2018

Early on Sunday morning, Amtrak’s passenger train number 91, the Silver Star, bound for Miami from New York, slammed into a stationary CSX freight train in Cayce, about ten miles (16 km) south of Columbia, capital of the US state of South Carolina. Two Amtrak employees were killed and at least 116 were injured, some seriously.

The two killed were 54-year-old engineer Michael Kempf of Savannah, Georgia, and 36-year-old conductor Michael Cella of Orange Park, Florida. Robert Sumwalt, chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board, told a press conference the passenger train had been diverted into a siding by a switch left “literally locked, with a padlock” in that position.

The collision happened at about 2:35 am local time (0735 UTC) at a switching yard in the small city of Cayce. The Amtrak train, with reportedly 139 passengers and eight employees aboard, collided head on with the freight train, which was parked with no one on board. The Amtrak locomotive and the leading locomotive on the freight train were destroyed; the Amtrak locomotive and some of its passenger cars derailed, and one of those cars was folded in half. Several freight cars were crumpled, Reuters reported. In a press conference, the state governor, Henry McMaster, said the Amtrak locomotive was “barely recognizable” and described it as “a horrible thing to see, to understand the force involved”.

Harrison Cahill, a spokesman for Lexington County, gave a count of 116 injured, up from an initial report of 70; according to Derrec Becker, public information officer for the South Carolina Emergency Management Division, injuries ranged “from cuts and bruises to severe broken bones”. On Monday a Palmetto Health spokesperson said two patients were in serious and two in critical condition at their facilities. A spill of approximately 5,000 gallons of fuel from the freight train posed no safety hazard, according to officials.

Passenger Derek Pettaway told the CNN network that like most others, he had been sleeping when the collision happened. He said Amtrak staff cleared the passengers from the train rapidly, and there was no panic; “I think people were more in shock than anything else”, he said.

“Key to this investigation is learning why the switch was lined that way”, Sumwalt said. Amtrak’s CEO, Richard Anderson, speaking to reporters on Sunday, held CSX responsible; he stated the track in that area is operated by CSX and the signals, which CSX operates, were not working at the time of the collision and a CSX dispatcher was therefore directing the Amtrak train’s movements. Sumwalt noted an automatic monitoring and braking system called positive train control, which was not in use on the stretch of line, could have forestalled the collision.

Several fatal incidents involving Amtrak trains have occurred in the past three months. On December 18, the inaugural train on a new route in Washington state derailed at high speed while crossing above a highway, killing three; on January 31, the driver of a garbage truck was killed in Virginia when he collided with an Amtrak train chartered to take Republican lawmakers to a retreat.

5 Top Tips For Choosing The Perfect Curtains

Submitted by: Jonathan Boyd

It’s time to take down your old, tattered curtains, but you’re not quite sure what to replace them with. Just don’t be in a hurry to hang up any reasonable substitute. Ask top interior designers in Seattle, New York, Chicago, or LA – they’d all tell you the same thing: how you dress your windows can have a dramatic effect on how your room looks and feels. While you peruse and consider your choices, from sheer curtains to bamboo blinds, keep these top insider tips in mind:

1. Decisions, decisions…

Curtains aren’t just additional decor, they are functional too. When choosing yours, ask yourself these important questions: Are they needed for privacy? Do I want them to help keep in heat, prevent drafts, or allow the room to stay cool? How much light should they let in or block? If your curtains are for a bedroom, you might choose a heavy material which won’t allow a single ray to spoil your sleep. Alternatively, you might like sheer fabrics for those rooms where you want to let in as much light as possible, for example, a kitchen area or attic window. Blinds are great for windows where you need a variety of functions: pull them up for an unobstructed window, open them for a partial view, or close them fully to keep outside eyes away.

2. Exaggerate it!

If you want to draw attention to your windows, order more fabric and hang your curtain pole 15-30 cms above their frames. This makes your windows look much larger than they really are. Allow your drapes to hang to the floor past the bottom of the window frames to add even more height to the illusion!

3. Bring in the sunshine

If you’d like your windows to let in as much light as possible during the day, opt for curtains and add 30-45 cms more length on each end of your rod. This means you can pull the curtains aside without obstructing any part of the pane. It also helps narrow windows appear wider.

4. To line or not to line?

As well as the design, you’ll need to decide if your curtains should have a lining or not. A lining protects the curtain from dirt on the window and sunlight which may fade the fabric. It helps keep more light out and can actually provide extra insulation – which might in turn reduce your electric bills! On the other hand, unlined curtains are easier to wash, lighter to handle, and better for rooms you wish to keep cool. They are practical in areas such as the kitchen or bathroom where added steam and moisture necessitates regular washing.

5. Mix and match

Scared your sheer curtain will turn transparent when houselights are on? Just add a heavier drape to draw at night. Feel like your blinds aren’t homely enough? Why not add a curtain pelmet to your window frame? If you can’t decide on one good option, you can always combine!

How To Combat Stress Stress Management Tips

Submitted by: Matthew Ferry International

A lot of my clients come to me and they re just like the rest of us; they have a big life. They re up to things and they re taking things on. When you get a lot of projects going, it s so easy to get stressed.

There are physical ways to combat stress. There s exercise, diet, meditation, things like that. 100 percent, yes. Do all that. But I m not going to focus on those. The most effective way to combat stress is just to realize that stress is an illegitimate response to danger that doesn t even exist in your life.

See, the Drunk monkey in your head is trying to keep you safe, trying to keep you alive. How s it doing that? Well, it s examining the situation. It s saying, That s wrong. That shouldn t be like that. This needs to change. The drunk monkey is insane. The drunk monkey thinks that your life is broken. So, what it s doing is it s pumping your body full of adrenaline, and adrenaline gets your body tense, gets the muscles moving, and we experience this as stress.

If you can just begin to recognize that your life is not broken, implement some attitudes of gratitude. Maybe start doing the 10/10 visualization process, or using the gratitude intention and delegation process. You can find both of those on my blog if you type in 10/10 visualization or or gratitude intention. You ll find the process there.

You want to get the mind into a mode where it s not relating to the world like, Everything is broken. You re going down the tubes. If you can start to see that none of that is truth, then your stress is going to go away and you re going to go back to a state of bliss again. And that s what I want for you. I want to help you do that, okay?
