U.S. manufacturer General Motors seeks bankruptcy protection

Monday, June 1, 2009

United States automobile manufacturing firm General Motors filed for bankruptcy and Chapter 11 protection from its creditors at 12:00 UTC Monday, in a Manhattan, New York federal bankruptcy court. This was the largest bankruptcy filing for a U.S. manufacturing company, and with declared assets of $82.29 billion and a debt of $172.81 billion, and the fourth largest bankruptcy filing in recent U.S. history — after the bankruptcies of {{w|Lehman Brothers|| ($691.06 billion), Washington Mutual ($327.91 billion), and WorldCom ($103.91 billion).

The filing, expected to be the first of many, was for a New York GM affiliate, Chevrolet-Saturn of Harlem Incorporated. Numbered 09-50026, it named GM as a debtor in possession, and was filed before judge Robert Gerber.

GM is to be represented throughout the filing process by Weil Gotshal & Manges, a New York law firm specializing in bankruptcy.

The chief restructuring officer, named in the filing, is to be Al Koch, a managing director at AlixPartners LLP in New York, who will report directly to Fritz Henderson, the Chief Executive Officer of General Motors.

In its bankruptcy petition, GM listed its primary creditors as:

Name Amount owed (USD millions)
Wilmington Trust 22,000
United Auto Workers union (UAW) 20,560
Deutsche Bank 4,440

The amount owed to UAW excludes “approximately $9.4 billion corresponding to the GM Internal VEBA”. USD22,760 millions are owed to bondholders.

Analysts have observed that the effect of the bankruptcy filing on the U.S. economy is not expected to be as major as it once would have been. One such voice, Mark Zandy, an economist at Moody’s Economy.com, commented that “Bankruptcy now is irrelevant in terms of the economic consequence of what’s happening to GM.” Such analysts believe that the economic impact of GM’s problems has already been felt, with its effects on parts suppliers and employment. They also believe that GM’s programme of accelerated payments, and its participation in a U.S. Treasury program to ensure prompt payments to parts manufacturers, will have cushioned the effect of the bankruptcy itself.

Speaking on Bloomberg Radio, David Cole, chairman of the Center for Automotive Research in Ann Arbor, stated that the fragility of the parts suppliers, the loss of whom would threaten the entire automobile manufacturing industry, was of more immediate concern than the GM bankruptcy.

Also filing for chapter 11 protection today were Saturn LLC and Saturn Distribution Corporation, subsidiary companies of General Motors.

As a consequence of the bankruptcy, General Motors Corporation (GM.N) was removed from the Dow Jones Industrial Average, and was replaced by Cisco Systems (CSCO.O), these changes scheduled by Dow Jones & Company to take effect from the opening of trading on June 8.

Wheelchair rugby gets underway at London Paralympics

Thursday, September 6, 2012

London, England — Wheelchair rugby got underway yesterday at London’s Basketball Arena with four games being played: the United States versus Great Britain, Sweden versus Belgium, Australia versus Canada, and Japan versus France.

Before a full house at a game that was the first one to sell out in the lead up to the start of the London Paralympics, the United States national wheelchair rugby team defeated Great Britain national wheelchair rugby team by a score of 56–44. While the game got off to a slow start for the United States, once the team found its rhythm, they dominated the home team and appeared to score at will. Despite this, the crowd supported their side, even when they were down by eight points. When the United States bench started a chant of U-S-A! U-S-A!, the crowd soon drowned them out with a chant of Team G-B! Team G-B!

The United States came to London as defending gold medalists and ranked first in the world. Coming into the game, the team’s assistant coach James Mate told the media regarding this game, “To be truthful we have played the home team a couple of times, but you have to play the game in that moment and it can give the hosts the edge. […] In Beijing, Great Britain gave us our best game, and the semifinal was a three-goal game. We had something similar in June (at the Canada Cup). […] They (Great Britain) play some like us and some like Canada, and are one of the teams that have a lot of good players, so we can’t focus on just one player, but on the team as a whole.”

Ranked sixth in the world, Great Britain came to London as the home town favorites. Their roster included club players from across the country including David Anthony who plays for the Cardiff Pirates, Andy Barrow, Bulbul Hussain and Steve Brown who play for the Kent Crusaders, Jonathan Coggan and Mandip Sehmi who play for the Stoke Mandeville Storm, Mike Kerr who plays for the North West Bulls, Myles Pearson who plays for the West Coast Crash, and the team’s only female player Kylie Grimes who plays for the London Wheelchair Rugby Club with teammate Ross Morrison.

Before the game, first time Paralympian Great Britain wheelchair rugby player Mike Kerr told the media regarding his squad selection, “I felt I’d never been given a chance to get noticed, so I got myself some court time at big tournaments like Knock and Roll in 2010 (a USA national tournament) and Bernd Best (the biggest wheelchair rugby tournament in the world, held in Germany). I played well and I think people finally took notice.” Regarding the wait to play, Kerr said, “It’s hard. I hate waiting around. I’m here to do a job and the sooner I get started the better. But it’s been a great experience so far. The crowd and support have been amazing. […] I’m really confident. We took confidence from how we played against them at the Canada Cup (in June). If we play our game we can shock them.”

The United States meets Japan while Great Britain meets France later today in their second games in pool play.

In the second wheelchair rugby match of the London Paralympics, Sweden defeated Belgium by a score of 52–42.

Sweden, the current European champions, came to London with a relatively new coach, who only took over the side in late 2011. Belgium’s coach Bob Vanacker also plays on the team. He and Peter Genyn and Lars Mertens play their club wheelchair rugby in the United States.

In the first game for both teams since the London Paralympics began, Australia national wheelchair rugby team defeated Canada by a score of 64–52. Australia and Canada both had their flag bearers from the opening ceremonies represented by this sport, Greg Smith for Australia and Garett Hickling for Canada.

Beijing silver medalists Australia came to London ranked second in the world. Their last major competition before the Paralympics was the Canada Cup, where they lost to the United States by a single point. The Australian side included flag-bearer Greg Smith at his fifth games, Nazim Erdem who is at his third Paralympics, Ryley Batt and Ryan Cott who competed at the 2004 and 2008 Games, Cameron Carr who competed at the Beijing Games, Chris Bond, Cody Meakin, Ben Newton, Andrew Harrison, Josh Hose and Jason Lees who made their Paralympic Games debut.

Canada came into their match against Australia as returning bronze medalists. Their roster included Ian Chan who was on the team that finished first at the 2002 World Championships, the former ice hockey player Jason Crone from Owen Sound, Ontario, debut Paralympian from Embrun, Ontario Oarice Dagenais, 2002 World Champion Jared Funk from Manitoba, five time Paralympian Garett Hickling, Trevor Hirschfield who is decribed by the Canadian Paralympic Committee as one of the world’s best low point players, Athens silver medalist and Beijing bronze medalists Fabien Lavoie, eighteen-year-old Zak Madell, University of Arizona alumnist Travis Murao, 2010 World Championships All Star Ten player Patrice Simard, former recreational hockey player David Willsie and Harrow, Ontario native Mike Whitehead.

Australia meets Sweden later today while Canada will take on Belgium.

In the last match of day yesterday, Japan defeated France 65–56. France qualified for the tournament despite the national team only being five years old. Japan came to London having beaten the top ranked United States in this year’s Canada Cup.

Australian Jesse Williams drafted in fifth round by the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks

Monday, April 29, 2013

Sunday, the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks drafted Brisbane, Australia native nose tackle Jesse Williams in the fifth round of the NFL Draft. Going into the draft, there were some expectations by the Brisbane Times and other media outlets that Williams might be selected in the first round. Injuries, which resulted in Williams being unable to participate fully in the NFL Combine, likely were reasons why he was not selected higher.

Gridiron football is not the most popular football code in Australia, with rugby league, rugby union, soccer, and Australian rules football all being more popular participation sports. Williams’ youth sporting career reflected this, with Williams playing rugby union until he was 15 years old at which time he switched codes and joined the local gridiron team, the Bayside Ravens. A year later, his playing ability earned him a scholarship offer from the University of Hawaii. He could not meet the university’s academic standards so eventually he attended Western Arizona Community College instead. In 2011, he transferred to the University of Alabama and played for the Alabama Crimson Tide for two seasons. Both seasons, his Crimson Tide team won the national championship.

Williams’ selection is unique amongst Australians as most Australians who have played in the NFL have been kickers. He is also only the second Australian ever to be drafted in the NFL Draft.

Australian government hopes to establish triage by phone

Sunday, January 29, 2006

The Australian federal government hopes to slash hospital emergency department waiting queues by setting up a 24-hour national medical hotline.

A government source said that the National Health Call Centre Network would be manned by registered triage nurses 24-hours a day, 7-days a week. Triage nurses would perform a diagnosis over the phone based upon the description given by the patient. The patient would then be referred to the nearest emergency department, their local GP or pharmacy – as determined by the nurse.

The issue is expected to be discussed at next month’s Council of Australian Governments (COAG) meeting in Canberra. It is believed that the states and territories are supportive of the system.

If agreed upon by COAG, the service will be jointly funded by state/territory and the commonwealth governments at a cost of $40 million a year. The service would take 18 months to set up.

The service will be ran from a centralised call centre and be managed by a private contractor.

Julia Gillard, the opposition’s spokeswoman for health said any national call service needed to be linked with local GPs and medical services.

Gillard claims that under a Labor government, an after-hours “Pizza Hut” style service would be implemented, with a single national number connecting to a local call centre.

“You would be talking to people in the locality you are in and who know the local services,” she said

The Australian Medical Association, an organisation representing more than 27,000 doctors in Australia has slammed the proposal saying it will only deter people from seeking appropriate medical treatment.

Headline Writing Write Headlines That Get Your Article Read Part 2

Headline Writing – Write headlines that get your article read – part 2

by

Brian Cotsen

In part 1 we covered the importance of writing a great headline to grab your readers attention & get them to read your article in full.

Now we take a look at other ways of developing your headline style.

You need to think about your audience. Who is it that you are writing for?

For gossip and entertainment?

For those looking for financial advice – facts and figures?

For someone looking for exercise or health information – reliable and assuring?

For those browsing for ideas and pastimes?

Who are they and what are they looking for? Answering these two questions will set you on the right route to plan and write an article that will capture their attention… and from this you can then style the headline.

For example say that you’re writing an article aimed at someone who is searching for the right mortgage. That person will look for ‘facts’, ‘figures’, ‘surveys’ and even maybe a case study that they can identify with. The language will be business like & authoritative. Anyone reading would not expect lots of jokey thoughts and gossip in the article. On the other hand if you are writing your article aimed at someone searching for news on their favourite pop star, gossip, jokes and light frothy sentences will hit the mark.

You’ve got 5 seconds!

When writing your headlines remember that you only have about 5 seconds to grab your potential readers attention.

If they scan the list of headlines and yours doesn’t ‘pop out’ you’ve lost them forever.

Here are a few more styles that can help you to write a great headline.

The ‘Testimonial’ Headline

“I used ‘XY’s’ formula B … now I earn $ssss and have financial freedom”

Testimonials are very powerful, when they sound believable. Use them to help you sell a new product or idea.

The ‘News’ Headline – Make an announcement

“It’s here at last! The breakthrough in internet marketing has arrived”

A great way for announcing new products and services, making the reader feel that they’re in at the beginning.

Also you may have noticed that I didn’t say ‘what’ it was… so you add an element of curiosity in the headline too.

The ‘Formula’ headline – tell them ‘how to’

“Follow these 3 simple steps to increase your writing speed”

How often are you looking for the solution to the problem? Well if the headline tells you that you can find the solution in just 3 simple steps… aren’t you going to want to read ‘what’ those simple steps are?

Often these headline begin with words like “How to” … “how to loose 5lb’s in 1 week… with just 5 minutes a day”. The secret is that the headline suggest that the solution will be revealed in the article.

The ‘Question’ Headline

“Do you hate the Gym? – How to have a gym workout without ever stepping inside one again”

The secret to this type of headline is to pose the question that you know most people will answer in a certain way… then you suggest that the answer will be given in the article. When writing this sort of headline… you need to be sure that the majority of your readers are going to agree with you … or they may just say “No… I love the gym” and never read on.

The ‘Order’ Headline… Do it now!

“Act now and save 1000 on your insurance this year!”

Giving a command focuses attention on a desired action that you want the reader to take on reading the article.

What ever style of headline you choose… make sure that you ‘Deliver’

What I mean is, if you suggest that you are going to tell them the solution to the problem, in the headline, you must give that solution in the article or at least tell them where the reader must go to find the solution.

Don’t refer to something in your headline and then not mention it in the article. This leaves the reader confused and cross… they’ll feel cheated and won’t trust you or read your articles again!

Add Value to your headline

Turn an ‘ok’ headline like “How to write a good headline” into a great one “Get your articles read – Writing headlines that GRAB!”

Short and sweet.

7 words is a good guide. If you’ve got more to say then put it in a sub-headline.

Need some more ideas… here are some words and run-ins that’ll help to attract readers attention:

– Activate, Achieve, Affordable, Amaze, Amazing, Avoid,

– Best, Breakthrough, Banish, Bounce back from …, Beginners guide to…, (the) Best & Worst ways to …., Budget,

– Captivate, Create, Cash in on…, Complete guide to …, ….. on the Cheap

– Discover, Discovery, Deliver, ….. Dreams come true,

– Eliminate, Essential, Energise, Essential elements, Exciting,

– Formula, Fantastic,

– Great, Gigantic, Guaranteed, Gain the…, Get the edge…, Good news when….,

– How to …, Hidden secret …, Hot tips on…,

– Incredible, Ingenious, Impossible (to miss),

– Just out…, Judge for yourself…,

– Kill, Killing,

– Love, Loveliest, Looking for…, Longing for…, (the) Last word on…,

– Master, Mastering, Must have, Must-know,

– No more, New, Newest, Never …. again, No-fail guide to….,

– Outrageous, Outrage, One time offer…,

– Powerful, Profit from, Perfect (solution, birthday gift, holiday, etc)

– Quick guide to, Questions & Answers to…, Questions that you must ask about….,

– Results, Revealed, Revelation, (the) Real…., Read this before….,

– Simple, Simplest, Secrets, Scientific, Shocking, Special report…., Strategies for…, Straight answers about…, (the) Solution to…,

– Ten Quick Tips, Tips, Tricks, Time-tested, Tactics, Top, Techniques, Thrifty

– Unbelievable, User-friendly ways to…, Unleash, Unlimited, Unique,

– Value added, Valuable,

– (7) Ways to…, What’s HOT and What’s NOT in…, When to … and when not, (the) Worst thing you….,

– You must try this…., You need to know how….,

I’m sure you’ll begin to think of hundreds of variations and improvements…. start writing them down now… and when you see a good headline… adapt it for your use.

Enjoy your writing

Regards

Judge orders Paris Hilton to return to jail

Judge orders Paris Hilton to return to jail
Posted by Admin , No Comments

Friday, June 8, 2007

A day after being released to house arrest, Paris Hilton was brought back into court today in handcuffs, and ordered to serve out her sentence in jail.

Upon the judge ordering her to serve out the remainder of her full 45-day sentence in jail, Hilton was escorted from the courtroom screaming and crying. “It’s not right!” she shouted. “Mom!” she called out to her mother in the gallery.

Hilton was ordered to reappear in court as prosecutors and the judge who sentenced her expressed outrage that Sheriff Lee Baca released her from jail. A Los Angeles County spokesman said Hilton was released “due to a medical condition.” She was to be allowed to serve out her sentence at her home on King’s Road, fitted with an ankle bracelet, under house arrest.

But Judge Michael T. Sauer specifically said that Hilton was not to be placed under house arrest, and prosecutors are considering holding Baca in contempt of court.

“The decision whether or not Ms. Hilton should be released early and placed on electronic monitoring should be made by Judge Sauer, and not the Sheriff’s Department,” said Chief of the City Attorney’s Criminal Branch in Los Angeles, California, Jeffrey Isaacs.

A motion to have Hilton return to jail was filed by prosecutors just hours after her release yesterday. The hearing was scheduled to take place at 9:00 a.m. PT.

Sheriff’s deputies brought Hilton to the courtroom in handcuffs. She wore no make up, her hair was unkempt and she wore a gray sweatshirt over slacks. She cried all during the proceedings, her body shaking, and she would turn around to face her parents in the gallery and mouth the words “I love you.”

Reports first indicated Hilton would attend the hearing, but then was reported that she would be there by telephone. In the end, a court spokesperson clarified, saying that Hilton had been ordered to appear.

Hilton’s attorney, Richard Hutton, asked for a hearing in the judge’s chambers, in which testimony would be offered about Hilton’s medical condition. Sauer did not respond to that suggestion. Her attorneys also argued that it was up to the sheriff’s department to run the jail and decide how prisoners were to be housed.

Papers documenting Hilton’s medical condition were scheduled to be delivered to the court, but never appeared, with Judge Sauer noting the time during the proceedings and saying the papers still hadn’t arrived.

Wikinews holds Reform Party USA presidential candidates forum

Wikinews holds Reform Party USA presidential candidates forum
Posted by Admin , No Comments

Tuesday, January 3, 2012

Three men are currently seeking the presidential nomination of the Reform Party of the United States of America: small business owner Andre Barnett, Earth Intelligence Network CEO Robert Steele, and former college football coach Robby Wells. Wikinews reached out to these candidates and asked each of them five questions about their campaigns. There were no space limits placed on the responses, and no candidate was exposed to another’s responses before making their own. The answers are posted below in unedited form for comparison of the candidates.

The Reform Party is a United States third party that was founded in 1995 by industrialist Ross Perot. Perot ran as the party’s first presidential nominee in 1996, and won over eight percent of the popular vote, the highest percentage for a third party candidate since. In 1998, professional wrestler Jesse Ventura ran on the Reform Party ticket and was elected Governor of Minnesota. The party fell in prominence during the lead-up to the 2000 presidential election when it was plagued by infighting between ideological factions. In 2000, paleoconservative Pat Buchanan won the presidential nomination, and went on to receive only 0.4 percent of the popular vote in the general election. In 2004, the party opted to endorse consumer advocate Ralph Nader, but ended the year nearly bankrupt. In 2008, Ted Weill won the party’s presidential nomination, but appeared on the ballot in only one state and won a total of 481 votes.

The party is currently trying to rebuild and has opened several new state chapters. They will attempt to appear on the ballot in more states for the 2012 presidential election. The party is expected to nominate its presidential ticket during the National Convention this summer.
