Brother of murdered Pakistani social media star sentenced to life

Monday, September 30, 2019

On Friday in Pakistan, Mohammed Waseem, brother of social media personality and feminist Qandeel Baloch, was sentenced for her murder to life in prison by a court in Multan. Waseem confessed to killing his sister by strangling her in 2016 in what has widely been called an honor killing. She was 26.

Baloch and Waseem’s mother, Anwar, wept upon hearing her son had been convicted and said she believed he was innocent. In August, the parents tried to have Waseem released by saying they forgave him for the killing. Until recently, Pakistani law allowed the perpetrators of honor killings to go unpunished if forgiven by the victim’s family.

Even though Waseem confessed to acting alone, several alleged accomplices, including Muslim cleric Mufti Abdul Qawi, were tried by the same court. All, including Qawi, were acquitted. Baloch was murdered a few weeks after publicly posting pictures of herself with Qawi on the Internet, and Qawi drew criticism for associating with her. Qawi was later accused of inciting the murder in some way, which he denied. Some of Qawi’s supporters threw flower petals as he was leaving the courthouse.

Waseem appeared in a news conference after his 2016 arrest in which he expressed no regret for his sister’s death and specifically mentioned family honor. He has since said his initial confession was forced.

“As women we must stand up for ourselves. As women we must stand up for each other[,]” Baloch wrote on social media shortly before her death. “I believe I am a modern day feminist.”

Qandeel Baloch made videos and social media posts depicting her dancing, singing, lying in bed or, on one occasion, offering to disrobe if Pakistan defeated India in a then-upcoming cricket match, all of which are considered controversial for women in Pakistan.

When Baloch was born, about 250 miles (400 km) southwest of Lahore, she was Fouzia Azeem, daughter to a poor farming family. At the time of her murder, Qandeel Baloch, nicknamed the “Kim Kardashian of Pakistan,” had about 750,000 followers on Facebook, and wrote about feminism. In an interview with Dawn, she said as a teenager she was forced into an abusive marriage by her family. She also said that her much-older husband attempted to disfigure her with acid. Baloch ran away from the marriage to a shelter with her son but later returned the boy to her husband when she could not support him.

Since Baloch’s death, Pakistan’s laws about honor killings have changed. Though the accused can still avoid the death penalty if forgiven by the victim’s family, the minimum prison sentence for the crime even if forgiven is now 25 years. Waseem is eligible to appeal.

Wikinews interviews 2020 Melbourne Lord Mayor Candidate Wayne Tseng
This article mentions the Wikimedia Foundation, one of its projects, or people related to it. Wikinews is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation.

Thursday, October 22, 2020

2020 Melbourne Lord Mayor candidate Wayne Tseng answered some questions about his campaign for the upcoming election from Wikinews. The Lord Mayor election in the Australian city is scheduled to take place this week.

Tseng runs a firm called eTranslate, which helps software developers to make the software available to the users. In the candidate’s questionnaire, Tseng said eTranslate had led to him working with all three tiers of the government. He previously belonged to the Australian Liberal Party, but has left since then, to run for mayorship as an independent candidate.

Tseng is of Chinese descent, having moved to Australia with his parents from Vietnam. Graduated in Brisbane, Tseng received his PhD in Melbourne and has been living in the city, he told Wikinews. Tseng also formed Chinese Precinct Chamber of Commerce, an organisation responsible for many “community bond building initiatives”, the Lord Mayor candidate told Wikinews.

Tseng discussed his plans for leading Melbourne, recovering from COVID-19, and “Democracy 2.0” to ensure concerns of minorities in the city were also heard. Tseng also focused on the importance of the multi-culture aspect and talked about making Melbourne the capital of the aboriginals. Tseng also explained why he thinks Melbourne is poised to be a world city by 2030.

Tseng’s deputy Lord Mayor candidate Gricol Yang is a Commercial Banker and works for ANZ Banking Group.

Currently, Sally Capp is the Lord Mayor of Melbourne, the Victorian capital. Capp was elected as an interim Lord Mayor in mid-2018 after the former Lord Mayor Robert Doyle resigned from his position after sexual assault allegations. Doyle served as the Lord Mayor of Melbourne for almost a decade since 2008.

US Army to court martial soldier over three Afghan murders

Saturday, October 16, 2010

The United States Army has announced that Corporal Jeremy Morlock is to face a court martial on three charges of premeditated murder. Morlock is accused of killing Afghan civilians for sport; at least eleven other soldiers are caught up in the allegations.

The prosecution case is that Morlock colluded with Sergeant Calvin Gibbs to plot the deaths of Afghans. Gibbs is said to have planned the attacks which Morlock helped arrange by recruiting other soldiers to carry them out. The pair, as well as three others charged with murder, deny this. Gibbs’s lawyer said his client’s defence is that the Afghans were killed legitimately, while Morlock’s said his client was present but did not cause any deaths. Preliminary hearings in the case were heard last month.

The five are accused of unprovoked grenade and gun attacks. Seven other soldiers are accused of conspiring to cover up the crimes by dismemberment of the corpses and collecting body parts. No other cases have yet been committed for trial, including that of Gibbs. All the soldiers are from the 5th Stryker brigade, which went to Afghanistan last year and has seen combat in Kandahar, where the alleged attacks occurred between January and May this year.

Morlock is also going to stand trial for assault, use of a controlled substance (hashish), attempting to block an investigation, conspiracy to murder, conspiracy to assault and “wrongfully photographing and possessing visual images of human casualties”. The soldiers are accused of photographing their victims and keeping body parts as trophies, though the military has not yet commented on if bones they say the men took were in fact from civilian murder victims. Al Jazeera English reports that much media attention has focused on this detail.

The seven not charged with murder are also charged with assault and using hashish. The assault charge relates to the beating of a whistleblower. Morlock could have faced the death penalty on the premeditated murder charges, but the army has decided not to seek this sentence upon a conviction and instead the maximum sentence available is life without parole.

Officials have commented about concerns the case could have a negative impact on relations with the Afghan public, especially with regards to efforts to undermine Taliban support in Kandahar.

Sulpicio Lines asks court to stop BMI investigation into ‘Princess of the Stars’ disaster

Monday, July 7, 2008

The Philippine shipping company Sulpicio Lines has asked a court to issue a temporary restraining order (TRO) stopping the Board of Marine Inquiry (BMI) from proceeding with its investigation into the loss of MV Princess of the Stars. The passenger ferry capsised and sank off Sibuyan island on June 21 during Typhoon Fengshen (known locally as Typhhon Frank) with hundreds of casualties.

Sulpicio told the Manila Regional Trial Court that both Republic Act 9295 and the Domestic Shipping Development Act of 2004 removed the BMI’s power to investigate maritime incidents and that the investigation the board launched on June 25 is “irregular, illegal, and null and void”. They say only the Maritime Industry Authority is allowed to investigate accidents at sea.

Sulpicio also described the investigation as an ‘inquisition’ that was biased against Sulpicio from the start. They say “prejudgment” has increased the “pervasive negative publicity” surrounding the line, since negative accusations are most often published in newspapers. The company says one comment the board made was “Your vessel is not stable!” “You have no business being a safety officer!”

As a result Sulpicio is seeking ?650,000 from the BMI. This is split down as ?500,000 in moral damages, ?100,000 lawyer’s fees and ?50,000 further costs.

The House Committee on Transportation also launched its own inquiry into the disaster today. The case for the TRO will be heard tomorrow.

Taking a Company Public? Propaganda 101: Glittering Generalities and Testimonials

by

James Scott

As a public company you\’ll be combating a multitude of obstacles and one of the most important is reputation management or perception management. People most often associate propaganda with governments. Corporations also make extensive use of it. While advertising may qualify as propaganda, it differs in some crucial ways. Advertising focuses on a call to action. Corporate propaganda predisposes consumers to respond to those calls to action, to consider new information about those corporations in the best possible light, or to consider competition in the worst possible light. Publicly traded and large privately held corporations have used these methods to accelerate their growth and success strategies and even take down competitors. This is a brief case study noting several examples of both positive and negative uses of propaganda in a corporate environment.

Propaganda is rooted in the word \”propagation\”, as it advances or spreads a desired way of thinking. Almost all methods do this by careful manipulation of semantics, usually abusing their proper use in the process to reinforce logical fallacies. The most effective propaganda combines appeals in ways that mutually reinforce their effectiveness. Because of that, almost all propaganda begins with …

GLITTERING GENERALITIES

The fewer details people consider, the less they approach decisions critically. That makes the decision more emotional, and emotions are easy to manipulate.

Over Simplification

Make certain the target market perceives the issue in simple terms. Too many details raise too many questions.

Unstated Assumptions

Ambiguous terms leave listeners responsible for their own inferences, regardless of the speaker\’s intended implications.

Intentional Vagueness.

Nobody need bother with the details once they invest in the concept.

Red Herring,

Send those who insist on details looking someplace else — because they will not find any here.

PASS! -Ivory Soap 99 & 44/100% Pure! It Floats!

Two words: Pure what? The fact that it floats has nothing to do with its level of purity of … whatever — but purity sells.

FAIL! -WorldCom

At a time when corporate statements became ever more vague, WorldCom raised it to an art form so effectively, that when the government learned about its daisy-chained subsidiaries (and $3.3 billion in accounting errors) a new law ended up changing accounting laws — Sarbanes Oxley, now called SOX for short. It also led to the collapse of Arthur Andersen accounting, and scrutiny for dozens of other major companies that Arthur Andersen had served.

TESTIMONIALS

Celebrities \”are models of behavior — the ultimate sellers. They sell us things. And because of the intimacy and kinship we feel for them, they humanize the process.\” (Derakhshani, 2007, p. 30)

Beautiful people

Quite simply, celebrities constitute modern royalty. Parasocial relationships with them are among the strongest, so they can heavily influence public opinion.

Anecdotal Accounts

Never let the facts get in the way of a good story

PASS! – GM-Clint Eastwood\’s appearance in the \”Halftime in America\” ad during the 2012 Super Bowl

While involving the auto industry in general, Clint Eastwood\’s immediately iconic \”Halftime in America\” commercial during the Super Bowl came on the heels of the GM bailout\’s success. Conservative pundits so solidly associated it with GM\’s relationship to the Obama Administration that they immediately branded it a political ad. However, that accusation seems to have faded with Eastwood\’s somewhat less dignified anti-testimonial at the 2012 Republican National Convention.

FAIL! -Lehman Bros.

Lehman Bros. here represents the first of several banks to collapse in late 2008. In this case the testimonial was not invited. The U.S. Secretary of the Treasury declaring globally on television that U.S. banks are failing equates financially to a security guard shouting \”Fire!\” in a crowded theater. It crosses over with appeal to authority.

UEFA Euro 2016, semifinal: hosts France beat Germany 2-0

Saturday, July 9, 2016

On Thursday, World Champions Germany lost 2–0 to hosts France in the UEFA Euro 2016 semifinal. Antoine Griezmann scored both goals, netting six goals in the tournament. France is to play Portugal in the final tomorrow.

Germany had better ball possession and passing accuracy. But, moments before half time, captain Bastian Schweinsteiger was booked for a hand ball in the penalty area, and France were awarded a penalty kick. The Atlético striker Griezmann scored from the spotkick sending Maneul Neuer in the wrong direction. Les Blues were 1–0 up at half time.

In the second half, Jérôme Boateng was benched suffering from a ruptured muscle bundle. Later, Paul Pogba’s shot was half-cleared by Neuer, but Griezmann scored the second goal of the night and his sixth of the tournament.

Though Germany had far more completed passes — in the first half alone, more than the hosts in both halves combined — the World Champions were defeated. Griezmann was awarded the Man of the Match award.

Griezmann’s six goals in one Euro tournament is the most after Michel Platini’s record of nine goals in one tournament.

South African prosecutors charge ANC leader Jacob Zuma with corruption

South African prosecutors charge ANC leader Jacob Zuma with corruption

Saturday, December 29, 2007File:JacobZuma.jpg

Corruption-related charges have been brought against Jacob Zuma, the newly-elected leader of the African National Congress (ANC), according to his lawyer. A trial is scheduled to begin on August 14, 2008.

The charges stem from an arms deal with a French company, which is alleged to have involved bribes and fraud. Zuma’s financial adviser at the time, Schabir Shaik, was convicted in 2005 of attempting to solicit a bribe of US$72,500 per year from the arms company on Zuma’s behalf and was sentenced to 15 years in prison. Zuma was fired as deputy president in 2005 by South African President Thabo Mbeki due to the scandal.

Two-term ANC leader Mbeki recently lost an ANC leadership contest to Jacob Zuma, who garnered about 60 percent of delegate votes in his win.

Zuma had been charged with corruption in 2005, but the case was dismissed on procedural grounds. Michael Hulley, Zuma’s defence lawyer, indicated that they will strongly contest the new charges in court. Hulley also suggested that the South African government’s National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) and its anti-organised crime division known as The Scorpions, have carried out a smear campaign against Zuma.

“These charges will be vigorously defended, in the context of the belief that the Scorpions (NPA) have acted wrongly and with improper motive calculated to discredit Mr. Zuma and ensure that he play no leadership role in the political future of our country,” said Michael Hulley in a statement.

Given that the ANC has been the governing party in South Africa since the end of apartheid in 1994, it is likely that Jacob Zuma could become the next president after general elections in 2009. Zuma has said, however, that he would resign if he was found guilty by the courts.

Ferry MV Suilven sinks in Suva, Fiji

Ferry MV Suilven sinks in Suva, Fiji
Posted by Admin , No Comments

Tuesday, November 24, 2015

MV Suilven, a ferry in service in Fiji, capsized and sank in Suva Harbour today.

Around thirty people, all crewmembers, were on board. Local media report all were rescued. The 41-year-old vessel previously saw service in Scotland and New Zealand.

The ship capsized early this afternoon and sank within an hour. It had been converted from passenger to cargo use following its most recent sale, to Venu Shipping in 2012 or 2011. Local reports indicated police, the Navy, local tug boats, and volunteer rescuers all attended the accident.

The converted ferry reportedly began to list on entering the harbour. It was working a route carrying cargo between Suva and the Northern Division.

Built in Norway, in service from 1974, the ship served with Scottish ferry firm Caledonian MacBrayne until 1995, connecting the mainland town of Ullapool to Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis. It was ultimately replaced by a larger, faster vessel and was sold to Strait Shipping who used it until 2004 to ply New Zealand’s seas, connecting Wellington to Picton and to Nelson.

The name MV Suilven is in reference to the Suilven mountain in Scotland’s Sutherland region.

Great Time Optimal Allocation Of Foreign Exchange Reserves

Submitted by: Himfr Paul

Chinese holdings of U.S. Treasury bonds, while sustained, continuous overweight Japan, South Korea bonds, and also bought Greece, Spain and other European countries, the bond can be seen, characterized by diversification strategy is being implemented optimal allocation of foreign exchange reserves. The implementation of the current international environment is the best time for optimal allocation strategy. At the same time, active acquisition of Brazil, Indonesia and other emerging economies of the assets, should be an important part of optimal allocation strategies.

“The first creditors” inappropriate matter whether

According to the U.S. Treasury Department on August 16 according to data released, following a reduction of 32.5 billion U.S. dollars in May after the U.S. Treasury, in June a further reduction of 24 billion U.S. dollars in China U.S. Treasury bonds. Since last July, the Chinese holdings of U.S. Treasury bonds have been 7 total holdings of 96.2 billion U.S. dollars, its proportion in China’s foreign exchange reserves declined by 4 percentage points. This means that China’s foreign exchange reserves is characterized by diverse optimization strategies are being implemented.

This year in February, I had written that China should continue to reduce U.S. debt to avoid foreign exchange reserves in dollar assets in the large proportion of the risks. Now, I believe that the international environment for China’s further reduction of U.S. Treasury bonds to bring a good opportunity, and China is no need to continue to maintain the United States, “the first creditor” status, but should continue to holdings of U.S. Treasury bonds.

It was reported that China is still the largest holders of U.S. Treasury bonds, as of June 30, China’s holdings of U.S. Treasury bonds amounted to 843.7 billion U.S. dollars, more than the second place 40.1 billion U.S. dollars in Japan. If the Chinese continue to reduce holdings of U.S. Treasury bonds and U.S. Treasuries, Japan to continue (as it recently did), then China is likely to the United States, “the first creditor,” the Kau Yi vacate Japan. But this is not terrible, this high-risk “first creditors” inappropriate worth mentioning. U.S. economic recovery outlook, the U.S. economy’s share in the global economy is falling, the Fed recently reviving “quantitative easing” policy, which must be further diluted dollar assets “gold content.” In this context, China’s U.S. dollar assets to further reduce the proportion of outside storage should be an instinctive defensive measures.

At the same time, the current international financial environment to bring China a good opportunity for U.S. dollar assets. In the past, because China holds much U.S. debt, and the dollar also depreciated, if the Chinese holdings of U.S. debt will rise to the international financial market turbulence; and now, as the European sovereign debt crisis has not fully subsided, the euro fell push the dollar’s strength, Japan, UK holdings of U.S. Treasury bonds to foreign investors to purchase the increasing number of U.S. dollar assets, so that China’s holdings of dollar assets to digest the pressure on China in the process of reduction can be maintained is still holding The value of U.S. dollar assets. So now is the further reduction of U.S. Treasury bonds a good time.

Diversity configuration as necessary

The central bank on August 11 published data show that as at the end 6, the Chinese foreign exchange reserve amounted to 2.4543 trillion U.S. dollars. Data, in the second quarter foreign exchange reserves increased by nearly 7.2 billion U.S. dollars only, obviously slowed down. However, the number of existing foreign exchange reserves are still large, in safety management and hedge management more difficult still. For example, China’s holdings of U.S. treasuries at the same time, necessarily need to configure the assets of other countries and regions, but can now be found safe and preservation of foreign assets is not easy. And diversity of configuration, can be a relatively safe measure. From the current publicly reported, China is a large number of holdings in Japan, South Korea’s national debt, and buy Greece, Spain bonds. This is the debt held by a wide range of specific initiatives overseas, this trend should be continued.

Japan’s Finance Ministry announced on Aug. 9 report, China in June net purchases of 456.4 billion yen (about 5.3 billion U.S. dollars) Japanese government bonds, for the third consecutive 6 months net purchases of Japanese government bonds. China in the first half of the total holdings of Japanese government bonds was 1.73 trillion yen, or about 20.2 billion U.S. dollars, this total is almost 7 times the total in 2005. According to another report, the first half of this year, holdings of government bonds to 111% South Korea, the scale of up to 3.99 trillion won (about 3.4 billion U.S. dollars). While another reported that in mid-July, the Chinese Administration of Foreign Exchange to buy about 400 million euros in Spain, 10-year bonds.

China, Japan and South Korea’s most important trading partner, while Japan and South Korea also signed three financial cooperation framework agreement with China added to Japanese, South Korean bonds not only realize the Chinese Wai Chu Duo Yuanhua also improve in Japan and South Korea Sanguo financial linkages, strengthening regional financial cooperation in East Asia.

Industry in China to Greece, Spain and other countries to provide financial support seems to be critical of, because these countries are the European sovereign debt crisis of the hardest hit, is known as the “European pig Five” member, to purchase their very Debt Risk Great. However, I believe that we should look at more strategic issues. The euro is currently the only counterbalance to the dollar currency, the euro’s development and stability, weaken the dollar hegemony, the world’s reserve currency diversification to achieve the necessary elements. Therefore, the further spread of the European sovereign debt crisis and possible collapse of the trend of the euro, not in China’s interests. To Greece, Spain and other countries to provide the necessary financial support, Buying Euros to support the euro’s stability, not only conducive to China’s foreign reserve diversification, but also to meet the goal of global financial rebalancing.

With the advance of foreign reserve diversification strategy, I believe that China will buy more bonds in other countries.

Eyes on emerging economies

The implementation of China’s foreign exchange reserve diversification strategy, not only Yao is underweight the United States to buy Japanese government bonds the same time, South Korea and the European Guo Jia Deng relatively developed economy bond, Huan should put more of the attention toward the economic Ti Xin Xing.

As we all know, the current global economic situation has changed markedly: the United States, Japan, Europe and other developed countries and regions become stagnant economic growth, their share of the weight of the global economy declined; and emerging economies, rapid economic growth tends to , their share in global Jingji De proportion is increasing; we Yao Kandaozhege shift in the pattern and development of Qu Shi Bian Hua, more investment in emerging economies body, in order better to Tuidong diversification strategy, Bingjuzhengqu term of income.

Brazil, Indonesia, India, Mexico and other countries are far in excess of the level of global economic growth rate, the last unknown great come from behind in Indonesia, China should actively buying bonds in these countries or other financial assets to diversify this way, investment, optimize asset allocation purposes, they can share the fruits of economic growth in these countries, why not them?
