Fall ’08 styles at New York Fashion Week: the ’70s are back

Tuesday, February 5, 2008

The fourth day of New York Fashion Week debuted few daring designs even from designers known for such work. With few exceptions, the overwhelming theme was “old is new” and that the ’70s were even more in fashion than the shows on Sunday suggested. Among the designers to unveil their Fall 2008 lines on Monday were Oscar de la Renta, Carolina Herrera, Betsey Johnson, Proenza Schouler and a rejuvenated Halston line, under the direction of designer Marco Zanini.

Both global warming and the slowing economy have been cited as reasons for the overwhelming use of lighter fabrics over heavier attire. Also, retro designs and continuing trends have been used in effort to save money, like the tights that were expected to go out of fashion this year. Even in the glamorous world of high-end fashion, money has been tight, and with the world economies in a collective downturn, major designers have been more wary of continuing to churn out the stream of couture designs that past Fashion Weeks have seen.

Proenza Schouler’s show took the ’70s retro theme to a fever pitch, liberally using bows on designs and debuting more retro-era wide-legged pants that were first seen in Sunday’s shows. Zanini’s Halston label also brought back the ’70s, resurrecting old designs that the founder of the line made famous. Since the designer Halston’s death in 1990, many designers have tried to take the label in different directions. Zanini’s unveiling on Monday brought the line back to its Studio 54 roots, while using trenchcoats, sheer fabrics, and cardigans to finish the ensembles with a modern twist.

Betsey Johnson also debuted old and new styles on Monday, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of her fashion label. Copies of her original 1978 one-piece bathing suit as well as some early 1980s fashions started off the show. Her new pieces, such as animal print leggings coupled with a short twill jacket, were perceived as very skintight and criticized for not representing more fuller figures. Johnson brushed off the criticism, noting, “It’s tighter and sexier, but I still believe the girl brings the sex to the clothes…You won’t look sexy in a tight, below-the-knee skirt if you don’t feel good in it.”

The lone daring designer for the day was Carolina Herrera, who discarded the furs she promoted in the Fall 2007 show to focus on a Peter Pan theme, with earth tones and bird feathers. To further the “flying Peter Pan” motif, models donned such designs as a chiffon dress with ostrich feathers and a taffeta gown with a feather waistband.

Oscar de la Renta opted for more traditional blacks, golds and grays, debuting lines for men and women in fabrics he is familiar with. Men were outfitted in tweed while women were fitted in dresses that experimented with embroidery and tulle, both shades of past collections.

New York Fashion Week runs until Friday. Among others, labels Badgley Mischka, Diesel, and Vivienne Tam unveil their newest collections on Tuesday.

When it comes to men’s fashion, men have it easy. These days, there are generally three types of looks that a guy is going to need to know how to pull off. The threesome of fashion looks include daytime, casual, and the ‘hot night out.’ All of these looks can be had by any regular guy, as long as they keep in mind a few easy pointers.

Time to make it work at work: The suit.

No one can deny the importance and appeal of a good fitting suit. Professional, put together, and one of the key staples to just about any man’s wardrobe, the suit is a classic mainstay of fashion. One of the keys to wearing that suit is to make sure that it fits like it is supposed to. That is not likely to happen by grabbing it off of the hanger at the store, taking it home in the bag, and throwing it on at 7 am before you jump in the carpool on the way to the office. One word here men, tailor. If it seems like an unneeded expense, think again. With a classic cut, and tailored styling, that suit can take a guy all the way to the top.

Kicking it and relaxed casual: The jeans.

When the times comes to enjoy the weekend, one look that looks hot all year round is a good pair of jeans. The way a man wears his jeans can say a lot about him as well. Not to tight, and not hanging so low as to trip him as he walks is a good way to begin finding the right fit. Also, please avoid the plumber look, Im sure you understand. And while finding the right pair of jeans can be just like finding the perfect woman, be prepared that someday it will end. While the worn look may be in, gaping holes are not. When it is time for them to go, you just have to let them go and head on over to the store to purchase a brand new pair!

Styling and profiling at the club: The bling.

Though there are plenty of guys out there trying to keep up with what they see in music videos and on the stars in Hollywood, be careful of the bling. When attempting to pull off the hot look with a new date, a guy shouldn’t be outshining her. But without enough sparkle, he may just fade away. A good rule of thumb is to keep it simple, and low key. A nice set of cufflinks, a small silver buckle on the belt, or a half-carrot on the ear are all ways that a guy can add a bit of taste to his look without outshining the stars. Next time you go out, ask yourself: Do I really need to look like Flava Flave? Chances are that you dont and that your date will disapprove. Leave out the clocks, leave out the grills and leave out the big rocks.

Celebrities contribute to Katrina relief

Published:Wednesday, September 7, 2005Updated:Saturday, September 10, 2005 (Travolta, Preston, Moore, Stones, Three Doors Down, Johnson, Smith)

After Hurricane Katrina passed across the United States, various artists and media stars have leapt at a call to action.

John Travolta and wife Kelly Preston flew his private plane to deliver a load of supplies and tetanus vaccine to Baton Rouge and New Orleans. Part of a Scientology project which has been using their non-massage “assists”, in an interview Preston mentioned that “auditing” had also been performed on victims.

Kevin Smith is holding an online auction on his Web site.

Sean Penn actually went to Louisiana. After loading down a small boat with his entourage, it was discovered one of them had neglected to seal a hole in the bottom. Penn was wearing a white vest rather than a life vest while bailing. After the motor wouldn’t start, the crew paddled down a flooded New Orleans street. Bystanders jeered at whether any victims could fit aboard the crowded craft. No report on rescue stunts. Local authorities had previously been criticized for not allowing volunteer boaters in to help.

Morgan Freeman, whose home fared well, is organizing an online auction of celebrity items at charityfolks.com, to benefit the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund.

Curt Schilling opened his home to a family of nine driven out of their New Orleans home. The Schilling family will provide housing for the Fields for a year while their home in New Orleans is rebuilt and repaired.

Some celebrities “graced” disaster zones with their presence in the days following Katrina.

Singer Macy Gray and television personality Phil McGraw visited Houston’s Astrodome.

Celebrities visiting New Orleans include Michael Moore (opposite side of lake), singer Harry Connick, Jr., CNN’s Anderson Cooper, actor Jamie Foxx, singer Faith Hill, actor Matthew McConaughey, singer Lisa Marie Presley, comedian Chris Rock, and The Oprah Winfrey Show contributor Lisa Ling and interior decorator Nate Berkus.

Explosives found in Malegaon, Nashik, India

Wednesday, September 13, 2006

Police in the town of Malegaon have recovered explosives from a yellow container placed in the Mohammadiya Madrassa shopping complex on Kidwai Road. A bomb disposal squad has been rushed to the site, and the surrounding area has been cordoned off. Officers from the Anti-Terrorist Squad, along with IG P.K Jain and Superintendent of Police Rajyawardhan, are also at the site. Jain, however refused to confirm whether the device was a bomb, saying only that it was a “suspicious looking container with wires and a battery attached to it.” He said that if it was indeed an IED, police would either attempt to defuse it, or detonate it in an isolated area.

Meanwhile, police in Nashik have seized 11 detonators, 5 blasting gelatin(gelignite) sticks and a revolver from a building named Raj Sarthi. At least 38 people were killed and over 180 injured on 8 September, when three bombs went off near the Hamidia Mosque during the Shab-e-Barat festival. Although the communally sensitive town has so far been quiet, officials have once again declared an alert in Malegaon.

When you are planning for a wedding party, graduation party, retirement party, or any other colorful event, you want to be sure that everything will be breath taking.

When you are planning for a wedding party, graduation party, retirement party, or any other colorful event, you want to be sure that everything will be breath taking. The best way to enhance this is to use a photo booth rental. If you are from Austin you may be wondering which rental party provider will help you crown your day using a good Austin photo booth rental. Irrespective of the booth rental you choose, there are several steps you need to consider. This will help you have a spectacular experience with your event.

The first thing you need to check out is experience. Find out whether the company you are renting the booth has sufficient experience to make your party memorable. It takes a real professional such as the photo booth rentals Austin to understand your requirements from a unique perspective.

Establish whether they will deliver on anything they have promised, and whether their attendants are dressed professionally. Vendors may make or break the party hence it is critical you know their track record to help you anticipate the success of your event. Photo booth rentals Austin has a business website where you can find out more about their professional expertise in making your party both colorful and unforgettable.

Space is the second factor you should consider. We are all informed that good things always come in small packages but the question you need to ask yourself is how small is good? It is essential to know more regarding spatial requirements prior to signing a contract. Will the photo booth rentals Austin you are selecting be able to transport the photo booth into your hall? Moreover, how many guests can fit inside the booth? To get all these questions addressed, you should get in touch with a reputable company such as photo booth rentals Austin.

Third, design is imperative. Definitely, you want to avoid those photo booths with a shady design. You need to get a company that knows the kind of equipment that will offer you outstanding results. After the event, you want to be able to share your photos on Facebook and that speaks of high quality pictures. What kind of camera and paper is the company using for its images?

Therefore, a scrapbook filled with guests with a red eye may probably not make the cut. With a modest design, you do need to spend a lot of time for the set up. This means there is less likelihood to be stressed during last minute when you engage a reliable provider like photo booth rentals Austin.

Lastly, consider the flexibility offered by Austin photo booth rentals. Your event is obviously not boring and neither should your booth give it such vibe. If it feels obsolete then possibly it is. If you find the test photos printed on thin paper or are blurry then possibly their equipment could be below par. If the cameras they use are not industrial, they do not expect much.

With a booth rental provider such as photo booth rentals Austin, you do not need to be worried of all these aspects. They provide services that perfectly fit both your budget and style. A flexible service provider should offer exceptional options that will make the pictures you shot at the night party perfect. Therefore, next time you want to plan a party, find out more from the websites of photo booth rentals Austin.

Second Darwin’s sandwich shop opens in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA

Thursday, June 2, 2005

Darwin’s Ltd. opened a second location of their sandwich shop at 1613 Cambridge Street in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in late May. It is situated across from Cambridge Rindge and Latin School. Previously limited to one location at 148 Mount Auburn Street, the second store seats approximately 30 people and sells sandwiches, coffee drinks, locally made pastries, as well as some produce and snack foods. The establishment also provides free wireless access through the WanderingWifi service. The shop plays music during the day; during this reporter’s visit to the shop, selections played ranged from David Bowie to The Strokes. The store is air-conditioned.

Key differences between the original store and the new one include the unification of the cafe and the sandwich line now behind one counter, handicap accessible restrooms, no beer or wine sold at location, and a lack of a loyal customer base. Although the recent months have been slow, business is expected to pick up with the return of Cambridge area students this autumn.

While the original location of Darwin’s was recently cited for lacking sneeze guards before the kitchen counter, according to the Cambridge Chronicle, the new Darwin’s has acrylic sheets along the front of their sandwich counter. The original Darwin’s has installed the sneeze guard at the kitchen counter the day following citation.

Workers at Swansea auto parts plant vote to strike

Workers at Swansea auto parts plant vote to strike
Posted by Admin , No Comments

Wednesday, May 27, 2009

Workers at the Linamar automobile parts factory in Swansea, Wales voted by a wide margin today to strike, after an dispute over the firing of one of the worker’s union organisers remained unresolved.

An 88% turnout resulted in a vote of 139 in favor of striking to 19 against.

Canada-based Linamar took over the plant from Visteon in July 2008. Shortly after the takeover, Linamar offered 208 of the plant’s 360 workers voluntary redundancy, hoping to transfer work to Mexico; 140 accepted. Linamar claims to have no long-term plans to close the plant. On April 28, however, Linamar fired political activist and union convener Rob Williams. Upon Williams’ firing, he refused to leave the Visteon plant. The police escorted him from the building as the day shift workers at the plant staged a spontaneous walkout. Williams was temporarily reinstated after emergency negotiations between Unite and Visteon management, but his dismissal was made permanent a week later.

Unite, Williams’s trade union, describe Williams’s firing as an “illegal” “attack on the union” and has brought the matter to the attention of UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown. Williams himself told left-wing newspaper Socialist Worker: “They have sacked me because they want to weaken the union and intimidate the shop floor.”

Workers at the plant also say Linamar is breaking a promise made to the union when the plant was taken over to keep Visteon’s terms and conditions, particularly to establish a final pension scheme for workers who were part of the company before its 2000 spin-off from Ford.

Linamar has not given comment to the press on the dispute as of this writing.

Rallies in support of Williams, who is also running for European Parliament on the No2EU ticket, and of the union have drawn sizeable crowds, with about 90 at the most recent rally include three Members of the Welsh Assembly representing the ruling coalition of the Labour Party and Plaid Cymru as well as the Liberal Democrats, on May 17 outside the Visteon plant in Swansea.

Linamar Swansea has close ties with Visteon factories in Enfield, Belfast and Basildon. Workers at those three factories recently won a victory against Visteon by occupying their plants and locking management out when redundancies were announced in April.

U.S. Housing prices down 9% since February

U.S. Housing prices down 9% since February
Posted by Admin , No Comments

Sunday, June 26, 2005

The median house price in the United States plunged 6.5% in May to $217,000. In February of 2005, the median price of a home was $237,300.

The Economist newspaper said in its June 16th issue; “In other words, it looks like the biggest bubble in history.” by way of reference to what is happening with housing prices in the USA and much of Europe.

Japan provides an example of how a boom can turn to bust. Property prices have dropped for 14 years in a row (40% from their peak in 1991); and yet, the rise in prices in Japan during the decade before 1991 was less than the increase over the past ten years in most of today’s “housing boom” countries.

The total value of residential property rose by more than $30 trillion over the past five years in developed economies, an increase equivalent to 100% of the combined GDPs of those countries. This increase dwarfs all previous house-price booms and is greater than the global stockmarket bubble in the late 1990s. Much of the recent housing activity is being driven by speculative demand. The National Association of Realtors (NAR) reported that 23% of all American houses bought in 2004 were for investment, not for owners to live in. Another 13% were bought as second homes. NAR also found that 42% of all first-time buyers made no down-payment on their home purchase last year.

Many investors are buying solely because they think prices will keep rising, which is a warning sign of a financial bubble. In Miami, Florida, as many as half of the original buyers resell new apartments even before they are built, and properties can change hands two or three times before somebody finally moves in.

Britain’s Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) reported prices have been falling for ten consecutive months. Forty nine percent of their surveyors reported falling prices in May. This was the weakest report since 1992 during Britain’s previous house-price bust.

Get Help For Leaky Basements

byAlma Abell

Foundation repairs start as a DIY project for some. Left unattended, they turn into a professional fix. One of the first things you can check here is that your gutters and downspouts are working properly. If there are leaves, debris or moss in your gutters, clean them out and run water through them to wash any leftover mud of dirt out and that the water goes completely down at a steady pace. Clogged gutters can allow water to roll out on the ground, adding water too close to the house and putting pressure against the foundation. Next, be sure your gutter water is running away from the house, splashing down at the corner and not several feet from the house also adds pressure and stress to your foundation. Your drainage pipe, whether above or below the ground, should slope 6 inches for every 10 feet of drainage pipe.

If you have cracks in your walls more than 1/4 inch thick in your basement, more than likely the culprit is water damage to your foundation, and you need to call a professional from one of the Foundation Companies in Houston TX. These cracks will only grow over time from the pressure of water, and more cracks in other locations will appear.

Sometimes drains become clogged around your house putting pressure on the walls of your foundation, creating small cracks and tiny trickles of water. Sticking epoxy in the hole seals off the water, but does not resolve the larger issue. The big problem is, the water then begins to push the walls of your foundation, creating even larger cracks and leaves your home vulnerable to a crumbling basement and mold issues. A foundation that has become bowed takes additional work, which can include beams placed on the inside, and reconfiguration of french drains that normally run around the foundation of your basement.

You can find Foundation Companies in Houston TX with experienced personnel to help you correct problems of cracking, leaking basements and can give you the piece of mind that your home will be there safely for years to come. Your foundation is the heart of your home and is the most important piece of a safe and structurally stable home. For more information, you can check here.
