African Union summit closes; bloc reaffirms member suspensions, support for trade deal

The African Union (AU)’s annual summit ended Sunday after two days of discussions in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. State leaders agreed to preserve the suspensions of four AU members and “accelerate the implementation” of the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA).

The suspended members — Burkina Faso, Guinea, Mali and Sudan — are under military rule following coups. Bankole Adeoye, the AU’s Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, declared the group had “zero tolerance” for coups but was “ready to support these member states to return to constitutional order”.

The AfCFTA, initiated in 2020, has faltered amid disagreements over tariff reductions and COVID-19 pandemic border closures. All 55 African nations but Eritrea are members of its product, the African Continental Free Trade Area, billed as the world’s largest free-trade area by population. Currently, 15% of African trade occurs between African nations, which the AfCFTA aims to increase to 60% by 2034.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) released a statement Sunday saying it will maintain strict trade restrictions and sanctions against Mali and, to a lesser extent, Guinea and Burkina Faso; it is also to impose travel bans on those countries’ leaders and officials. ECOWAS is advocating for the return of civilian government by 2024 in Burkina Faso and Mali and 2025 in Guinea.

Finding A Good Model Car Shop

Of course, with the popularity of auto racing comes the popularity of other things. For instance, many racing fans have recently taken to collecting model cars diecast, usually focusing on the scale model cars that are modelled after the cars that their favourite racers drive. Interestingly, however, there are many reasons why someone might collect modelcars diecast even if they are not a huge racing fan. It really can be a fun hobby that is shared by the entire family, and when one collects limited editions of these scale model cars, they could end up being worth quite a bit of money in the future.

For the model car aficionado, whether they be a hard-core racing fan or not, there are many things to take into consideration when it comes to purchasing their model cars. First of all, they will want to find a diecast model shop that has a big enough selection of the highest quality model cars in order to ensure that they will generally be able to find whatever it is that they might be looking for. Another issue might be location, as an avid collector might have a difficulty finding a quality model car shop in his or her general area. Thankfully, it is possible to find a diecast model shop that allows you to place orders over the internet, and that is something that can be extremely helpful for the avid collector who does not have a shop within his or her general area. Companies like Car Models of Braidwood not only offer a huge selection within their own diecast model shop, but they also offer an online shop that allows people to purchase high-quality model cars from anywhere in the world.

So long as collectors do their research and make sure to find the bestdiecast model shop for their needs, they will always be able to locate the specific model cars that they are looking for. The best model car shops will have a wide variety of different, respected brand names while also offering the collector a number of different ways to purchase their favourite model cars. The savvy collector knows this, and that is why they always look for a model car shop that will meet all of their expectations in regards to selection and purchasing options while also making sure that they get good customer service.

No matter what kinds of model cars you are into, whether they be classic muscle cars or models of today’s V8 Supercars, the first step in building your epic collection is to find a shop that you know you will always be able to count on to give you exactly what you are looking for. So long as you research the shops in your area or online properly, you can be on your way to building a great collection.

Study: Herd animals detect Earth’s magnetic field

Tuesday, August 26, 2008

Large herd animals may have the ability to detect earth’s magnetic field, concluded scientists in Germany in a report published in this week’s Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences after performing studies of cattle and deer grazing and sleeping patterns. The animals tended to face north-south oriented toward the earth’s magnetic poles. Hynek Burda of the University of Duisburg-Essen in Germany led the team that announced the unconfirmed study. Burda and his team gathered cattle data via analysis of Google Earth images.

University of Duisburg-Essen, GermanyImage: Blubbalutsch.

The team originally intended to test for possible human magnetic field detection by studying the orientation of sleeping bags in outdoor campers, but it proved difficult to obtain data because humans usually slept under tents. Cattle were easier to observe, and 8,510 head of cattle at 308 locations demonstrated a strong tendency to align body orientation in accordance with the earth’s magnetic field. Other possible factors such as wind or sunlight direction did not supply a better explanation for the behavior.

I think the really amazing thing is that hunters and herdsmen and farmers didn’t notice it.

To compare against a second large species, Burda and his team analyzed data on 2,974 deer studied through photography, direct observation, and snow imprints. The deer demonstrated a similar pattern. “I think the really amazing thing is that hunters and herdsmen and farmers didn’t notice it,” said Burda according to a National Public Radio report.

Other scientists found the results of the study intriguing. Peter August of the University of Rhode Island in Kingston, commented: “I was really amazed at the consistency with which they found north-facing cows and deer. It was really intriguing.” No independent study has yet confirmed the Duisburg-Essen team’s findings.

This is the first study that indicates magnetic field detection in large mammals. Burda’s previous research involves naked mole rats, a small blind mammal species whose behavior indicates an internal magnetic compass. According to a report by Jeremy Hsu at MSNBC, “Previous research has shown that animals such as birds, turtles and salmon migrate using a sense of magnetic direction, and small mammals such as rodents and one bat species also have a magnetic compass.”

Australian government hopes to establish triage by phone

Sunday, January 29, 2006

The Australian federal government hopes to slash hospital emergency department waiting queues by setting up a 24-hour national medical hotline.

A government source said that the National Health Call Centre Network would be manned by registered triage nurses 24-hours a day, 7-days a week. Triage nurses would perform a diagnosis over the phone based upon the description given by the patient. The patient would then be referred to the nearest emergency department, their local GP or pharmacy – as determined by the nurse.

The issue is expected to be discussed at next month’s Council of Australian Governments (COAG) meeting in Canberra. It is believed that the states and territories are supportive of the system.

If agreed upon by COAG, the service will be jointly funded by state/territory and the commonwealth governments at a cost of $40 million a year. The service would take 18 months to set up.

The service will be ran from a centralised call centre and be managed by a private contractor.

Julia Gillard, the opposition’s spokeswoman for health said any national call service needed to be linked with local GPs and medical services.

Gillard claims that under a Labor government, an after-hours “Pizza Hut” style service would be implemented, with a single national number connecting to a local call centre.

“You would be talking to people in the locality you are in and who know the local services,” she said

The Australian Medical Association, an organisation representing more than 27,000 doctors in Australia has slammed the proposal saying it will only deter people from seeking appropriate medical treatment.

Edmund White on writing, incest, life and Larry Kramer

Edmund WhiteAll photos: David Shankbone

What you are about to read is an American life as lived by renowned author Edmund White. His life has been a crossroads, the fulcrum of high-brow Classicism and low-brow Brett Easton Ellisism. It is not for the faint. He has been the toast of the literary elite in New York, London and Paris, befriending artistic luminaries such as Salman Rushdie and Sir Ian McKellen while writing about a family where he was jealous his sister was having sex with his father as he fought off his mother’s amorous pursuit.

The fact is, Edmund White exists. His life exists. To the casual reader, they may find it disquieting that someone like his father existed in 1950’s America and that White’s work is the progeny of his intimate effort to understand his own experience.

Wikinews reporter David Shankbone understood that an interview with Edmund White, who is professor of creative writing at Princeton University, who wrote the seminal biography of Jean Genet, and who no longer can keep track of how many sex partners he has encountered, meant nothing would be off limits. Nothing was. Late in the interview they were joined by his partner Michael Caroll, who discussed White’s enduring feud with influential writer and activist Larry Kramer.

Doctors who treated John Ritter cleared of negligence lawsuit

Friday, March 14, 2008

Two doctors who treated actor John Ritter for chest pain in Burbank, California were cleared of a negligence lawsuit on Friday. Ritter was an American television and film actor who died of aortic dissection on 11 September 2003.

Ritter’s children and widow (Amy Yasbeck) filed a US$67 million lawsuit claiming negligence by the doctors, both at the time Ritter fell ill and at a medical checkup two years earlier where problems with Ritter’s aorta could have been spotted.

A jury hearing the case at Los Angeles County Superior Court voted 9-3 to dismiss the claims, satisfied that the defendants, Dr. Joseph Lee and Dr. Matthew Lotysch, acted properly during their examination and treatment of Ritter.

Ritter’s last role was in leading the cast of the television series 8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter whose production was disrupted by his death.

See the discussion page for instructions on adding schools to this list and for an alphabetically arranged listing of schools.

Due to the damage by Hurricane Katrina and subsequent flooding, a number of colleges and universities in the New Orleans metropolitan area will not be able to hold classes for the fall 2005 semester. It is estimated that 75,000 to 100,000 students have been displaced. [1]. In response, institutions across the United States and Canada are offering late registration for displaced students so that their academic progress is not unduly delayed. Some are offering free or reduced admission to displaced students. At some universities, especially state universities, this offer is limited to residents of the area.

Kimi Räikkönen wins 2007 Australian Grand Prix

Sunday, March 18, 2007

Ferrari driver Kimi Räikkönen won the FIA Formula-1 2007 ING Australian Grand Prix on the Albert Park Circuit in Melbourne. More precisely he made a hat-trick of wins dating back to 2005.

Both McLarenMercedes drivers appear to be his major rivals for the new season as Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton made a double finishing 2nd and 3rd consequently, with Hamilton on his debut race.

Nick Heidfeld, driving for BMW Sauber, had a promising start and stayed with Kimi for the first part of the race, but his early first pit-stop pushed him back to the 4th place, while his Polish teammate Robert Kubica retired due to technical problems towards the end of the race.

Felipe Massa was penalized for the engine change after his previous engine failed during qualification, but showed a good pace and for the dying laps of the race pushed hard on Renault driver Giancarlo Fisicella. The few overtaking attempts were not successful enough and so Filipe saw the checkered flag behind Giancarlo on the six place.

7th, 8th and 9th places fell to Nico Rosberg driving for Williams with Toyota engines and both Toyota drivers, Ralf Schumacher and Jarno Trulli.

The top 10 was closed by Renault rookie Heikki Kovalainen who made numerous driving errors in the closing stages of the race.

The 2007 Formula-1 season from now appears to be a highly competitive season after Michael Schumacher retired from the sport at the end of the 2006 season.

The Affect Sugar Has On Your Diet

The Affect Sugar Has on Your Diet by Bob LachinetSugar. It’s in everything these days and it’s not good. This article will provide you with information on how sugar affects your diet and the differences between sugar that’s ok for your diet and the sugar that isn’t. Whether you’re on a diet or just seeking nutritional information, the following information will be beneficial to you.Over the last 25 years, our population has seen a significant increase in obesity. And, part of the reason for this was, amazingly enough the “low-fat” obsession we’ve seen over the last few years. Food manufacturers, in their quest to squeeze as much oil out of processed foods as possible – replace that fat with sugar in order to make reduced-fat foods tastier. Unfortunately, the net result has been an increase in sugar consumption from an average of 123 pounds per year, to an astronomical 160 pounds of sugar annually! And it’s not stopping. Our consumption of sugar keeps growing at nearly 2 percent per year. The problem is, on the spectrum of dietary dangers, processed sugars are right up there with unhealthy fats. And the problem is that our bodies are built to process all the sugar we take in.Most dietary sugars are simple carbohydrates, which means they are made of one or two sugar molecules stuck together. Your body can easily take those molecules, pull them apart and digest them. Complex carbohydrates, such as those found in whole grains, vegetables, and legumes, are made up of long chains of molecules which takes your body longer to process. This is why your energy levels can spike, then crash when you ingest simple carbs, and why that doesn’t happen when you have a plate full of veggies. The presence of naturally occurring fiber in complex carbs slows that sugar-release process even further. So, replacing those “fast burning” sugars with “slow burning” ones allows your body to deal with the sugar you ingest in a much more effective way. But, how can you avoid the craving for “sweets”, and avoid those refined carbs?First, it’s OK to have a little sugar in your diet. The FDA recommends no more than 10 grams per day (which is what you find in one soft drink) – about 2 teaspoons worth. So, if you have a little sugar through the day, that’s OK. But if you feel the urge to eat something sweet, reach for some fruit. Fruits contain fructose – natural sugar, but also contain fiber and other nutrients that slow digestion. Also, stay away from refined- carb breakfast cereals (even unsweetened cereals. Instead, start your morning with healthy proteins & fats, which leave you feeling full longer. Try peanut butter on whole grain English muffins. Maybe a fruit smoothie with protein powder. Remember not to eat when you’re stressed. When you feel stressed, your natural “flight or fight” response causes your body to speed up the breakdown of sugars in your body, because your body is packing glucose into your muscles as fast as it can to help you flee the situation. And, if you’re looking for an easy way to cut back – stop drinking soft drinks, the biggest source of sugar in the American diet today. Instead, try drinking tea – and if you want to sweeten it, try other, non-sugar sources such as Splenda or Stevia. (Stevia is a natural, calorie-free sweetener that comes from a South American shrub – you can find it at Trader Joe’s, or supplement stores in both powder and liquid forms). By moving away from a sugar-rich diet, you are taking a major step in not only feeling healthier, but you’ll also reduce your body fat and loose weight. The sooner we break the addiction to sugar, the better off our bodies will be!Bob Lachinet is the owner of Fitness 4 Home Superstore, a specialty fitness equipment dealer recently named the #1 choice for home fitness equipment in Arizona by BestFitnessDealers.com!
