Camo Chef Pants; To Be Seen, Or Not To Be Seen

Submitted by: Max Johnson

When first considering the topic of camo chef pants, the reasons for needing this style of chef pants came and went through my mind at light speed. Camouflage wear is usually needed when you need to hide from something for hunting of some type, whether it s for animal or in wartime for the hunting of the opposite side of the conflict. So, what would a cook need to hide from in his or her kitchen? Think about this for a second, would he be hiding from the health department when they come to inspect the kitchen?

Upon further reflection of what this style of material consists of, the realization that houndstooth patterns break up the pattern of the body very well and this is what camouflage wear does also. Perhaps there are many reasons for wearing this style of clothing in a kitchen after all. While only in the military on active duty would a cook actually wear true camouflage, the broken up style of patterns is actually quite common in kitchens. From black and white checkered and striped pants to the houndstooth pattern of offset checks, many kitchens are moving away from the solid color so very common in the past.

Solid white pants will show every splash of sauce that occurs in the kitchen and needs lots of care in laundering to maintain the pristine appearance associated with this style of apparel. Solid colored apparel also will show every splash of lighter colored sauces and again needs extra care in laundering to maintain a pristine appearance. With the blurring of traditional roles in restaurants, the back of the house staff spends more time amongst the customers than in previous years.

For good customer service, maintaining the pristine appearance of the back of the house staff to the customers equates with a clean kitchen and this makes customers more approving of the quality of the food produced in such environments. This style of broken up patterns, whether it is stripes, square checks or houndstooth, is available in many different cuts such as cargo style, flare leg and traditional baggys. This gives more choices when deciding on the style of apparel the back of the house will use to give the pristine appearance that is desired to show the cleanliness of the kitchen.
